I think we can be fairly sure the teams were quite comprehensively consulted, but I see what you mean.

As an aside, much of the arguments against Andretti joining could be levelled at Haas, who are already there and haven't dragged the sport down financially, harmed it's image, or vanished into thin air.

Hrmph, more proof to the pudding that F1 under its current owners / promoters is nothing more than a closed membership Old Boys Club. Personally, I think change / new blood will be good for them. And for everyone else for that matter. At least the sport USED to be a meritocracy. Now it's more like scripted professional wrestling.

Will the FIA put their mouth where the money is ? I doubt it . A sport that doesn't grow stagnates.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been spoiling for a fight with Liberty/FOM so this could get spicy.

Also I bet Andretti's lawyers are going through the process with a nit comb.

Strange decision, as Merc have a total new car. unless he already knows the new car still isn’t very good.

But on the other hand he has always said Ferrari is the ultimate historic team and most great drivers do have a spell with them.

Merc have had so many top staff poached that I wonder if they can dig themselves out of a hole. Whilst not impossible, they have to take on a whole new car philosophy when other teams are becoming settled in their designs. Would he really wait out until 2026 to see if they come good?

He knows he isn't going to get another title, particularly if the '24 Merdedes is a bit sheet, and it's not like Red Bull will have conveniently stood still over winter, especially as RB were thenfirst to cease development of their '23 car to cocentrate on '24. Unless the new Merc is sensational he knows he has little chance - a simply good car won't be enough.

He'll have his eye on the pay cheque, with the added kudos for an f1 driver as having driven for the reds. Let's just hope LeClerc doesn't start whining like Hamilton.
