I wrote this at the end of yesterday's play but forgot to post it. No change of opinion.

I'm probably putting a curse on Jamie Smith but I like the competent simplicity of his game. Ok, he missed a stumping yesterday but otherwise he looks very strong in an unfussy way as a keeper and his batting is the same.

Yes, he’s a player. I was very unsure about looking beyond Foakes but bar the missed stumping he looks to the manor born…. so far!

Sri Lanka have put England into bat at Lords.

The dreaded Kookaburra ball returns in the county championship for this and next weeks matches, there weren't many positive results when it appeared at the start of the season for 2 rounds, lets see what happens this time.

Crucial game in div 2 promotion race, with Middx (2nd) vs Yorks (3rd) at Headingley, with Yorks having seen off Sussex (1st) last week. Middx play Sussex at Hove in the final round.

Not sure about this England team, they might get away with it against SL but some odd selection. I don’t rate Lawrence especially as an opener and haven’t seen enough of Stone to be convinced. I watched Jennings score a composed hundred against Stone and Pennington, neither looked threatening. Anderson then took 7 for on the same pitch. Hope Stone does well of course.

Series is over, Australia on the horizon: good time to blood new players?

But I'd say it's quite a sensible* side overall:
1 Ben Duckett, 2 Dan Lawrence, 3 Ollie Pope (capt), 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jamie Smith (wkt), 7 Chris Woakes, 8 Gus Atkinson, 9 Matthew Potts, 10 Olly Stone, 11 Shoaib Bashir.

*that's done it ...

I can see why they have give Stone another go. IF fit, which he hasn't been for ages, he's arguably quicker than Wood.
Agree on Lawrence, whilst he is the reserve batter in the squad, he isnt an opener, and you really need a specialist opener. there will be a few opening batters (Jennings included) around the circuit thinking "I should be playing"

Well England rescued themselves to a decent total thanks to Root at Atkinson, and now Sri Lanka are falling apart.

Yorks and Sussex have both just declared on 600+ in their respective matches, it will be interesting to see how the replies go as to whether we get 2 high scoring draws or a positive result or two to spice up the promotion race. There has bene a lot of turn for middlx spinners at Headingley (which begs teh question why the turned up with 4 seamers and only one specialist spinner on a used pitch. Hopefully Yorks can get stuck into them.

It’s a hybrid pitch they are using. Word is Middlesex planned to play safe as they got stuffed on a hybrid pitch at Bristol which had bonce. Which did them.
