Contrary to popular belief July and August were not added; they were simply renamed after Julius and Augustus from the original Quintilis and Sextilis. January and February were added to the original 10 months making 12 in all but originally at the end of the year, preserving March as the first month and thus maintaining the numerical sequence. It was only later, and well after JC's reform, that the new year was moved to near the winter solstice so Julius is not guilty.
