Marie Antoinette - 2/10

I don't understand how you can make a film which is essentially 2 hours of absolutely nothing happening. I get that Coppola's thing is usually exploring female loneliness and isolation, but it's at least interesting (usually).

This was just vapid garbage.

U531. Strangely, it had nothing to do with Reynolds tubing; or, come to think of it, history. Would have been more acceptable had they left the whole ‘decoder’ aspect out of it, and played it as a ‘ripping yarn of derring do’. Heigh ho.

It is a bit of a turd in all aspects, not just historical accuracy. I remember the brouhaha when it was released, Paxman interviewed one of the producers and asked about the historical inaccuracies. The producer answered something like you can't let facts get in the way of the truth.

Kate Winslet is astonishing in this account of the war photographer Lee Miller. Captures the depravity of Buchenwald and the Holocaust in a far more convincing and visceral way than other attempts. An amazing woman.

For me it was weird in that I could see it was well made, well acted, had a story to tell, etc. I couldn't fault it but it completely failed to engage my attention and I can't work out why.

The Wild Robot - 9/10

Deserves all the accolades it's getting. It's a simple story, beautifully animated, with a wonderful score and a near perfect blend of emotions.

As the last in house animated effort by DreamWorks, it's one helluva way to go out.

We watched Midas Man (2024, but free on Prime). 8.7/10 for me :okay:
Story about Brian Epstein & the Beetles.
Very well told (& looks reasonably accurate!)
