I was a bit of a fan of the sword and sorcery genre when i was young... but never got round to watching Hawk, The Slayer... until last night. Even some of the better films in the genre are shoddy at best, but this is beyond shoddy. From the cheesy synthesiser soundtrack that wants to be War of the Worlds, the lazy assembling of 'the team' through meditative witchery, the non-existent fight choreography which is just quick editing and little actual fighting... to the inexplicable return of the witch at the end armed with sh!t loads of silly string which somehow incapacitates all the baddies by hitting just one of them. Beastmaster, in comparison, is worthy of several Oscars. 1/10 (for Roy Kennear's bit part)

We watched Midas Man (2024, but free on Prime). 8.7/10 for me :okay:
Story about Brian Epstein & the Beetles.
Very well told (& looks reasonably accurate!)

Thanks - I hadn't heard of that. I might watch it tonight and see what I think of it
I watched it a couple of nights ago. A 7/10 from me. It brought back some memories and told me a few things that I didn't already know.

Godfather ll

After finally watching the first one about six months ago I felt duty bound to watch the others, I wish I hadn't bothered now.

After the success of the first film I can see why they might want to cash in with the story of how Vito got to the position he was in, but the jumping backwards and forwards didn't work for me, and where were the missing years where Michael went from taking over the family business, to being where he was at the start of the second film.

Is it really worth me watching the third one?

Yes.

Perform a Men in Black mind wipe and pretend Godfather II didn’t happen

Oblivion... Which is where it should have been sent to!

I had thought that the featured mind-wiping technique did not exist, but halfway through the film I realised that I had watched it before so it obviously does, and my wipe was only as effective as that done on Tom Cruise's character!

Just back from the cinema.
Watched Gladiator 2 in full Imax effect.
Swords and sandals innit. Though Ridley Scott's setpiece-dialogue-setpiece-dialogue-setpiece did grate a tiny bit and I can also forgive a bit of dodgy cgi. The sheer scale of some of the set piece scenes and battles, made for an impressive watch.

dune 2
much better than the david lynch effort as i found chamalet a more believable character , spreading over 2 films certainly gave it chance to work more of the story in although you can expect some changes like the fact that paul`s sister is still unborn at the end and paul kills the baron himself .Nit picking for sure ;)

Wicked Little Letters (2023)

Not normally my kind of film, but as it's got Olivia Colman in it, and I've always had a thing for her since she was the vicar's wife in Rev, I gave it a go.

Apparently based on the true story of a seaside town in the 1920s where abusive letters start being sent, causing a national outrage, and the perp isn't the obvious one in the end.

In the end it wasn't my kind of film, but worth it just to hear Olivia swearing like a trooper then giggling afterwards.

Watched it last night. Well made and some glorious swearing. Fine performances from many of the cast but it was a jarring mix of almost slapstick humour and some desperate moments of sadness and abuse. I enjoyed it in a way, but some parts were uncomfortable because some serious emotional issues were treated oddly.
