Paddy Considine knocks it out the park as the hero in what I reckon is Shane Meadows' best film (A Room for Romeo Brass always runs it a close second). Tough, gritty, funny, killer soundtrack, all the things I love in a film. Imagine Taxi Driver set in the Midlands and you're sort of close.
Great film - if anyone's considering watching it for the first time, I urge you to steer away from plot synopses & wiki articles until afterwards.

Breaking Away.

And this time I enjoyed itna lot more. The first time I saw this years ago, I thought it was a pile of garbage. But yesterday, expecting it to be a low-rent kinda movie, I enjoyed it.

Nice Masi. Downtube shifters. Sunshine, all filmed in Bloomington, Indiana.

I love that movie. The relationship between him & his parents ("Mama! Papa!") is one of the sweetest parent/child relationships on film, and it's full of great one-liners - "How you doing boys?" "Well, we're a little concerned about the situation in the Middle East."

Based off a book which essentially tells the story of an American Josef Fritzl. A grim but ultimately uplifting tale.

Neatly told and superbly acted. Lenny Abrahamson really knows his way around a story and nails the balance between sadness and joy without making you feel totally manipulated, he has a very natural style.

The Martian - despite the good reviews I thought it was pretty lame, just really cliched, nothing original here for me. The only film I can compare it to, slightly, was, Moon. Moon was a low budget film, and just a lot, lot better IMVHO.

5/10
