An odd mixture of overlong and baggy, with bits you simply can't afford to miss without wondering what the heck is going on. Not as bad as everyone seemed to think at the time of release, but not great either. I'd like to read at least one of the books soon, to see how they stack up against this (it has the feel of a writer being overly faithful to the source material).

A bit of a change of pace from Fury Road, to say the least.

Keanu Reeves double, John Wick and A Scanner Darkly. Read the Phillip K. Dick book a while back but couldn't remember enough to compare to the film. Both were enjoyable.

The Revenant. As good as everyone says, if not better. Just stunning. Not many films you come out of thinking 'I've never seen anything like that, ever.' Absolutely the best cinematography ever, and Lenny the Hat must surely be a shoo-in for the Oscar.

Pi (1998).

Psychological drama - cost $68,000 to make - filmed in B&W with great audio effects.

Well worth a look - best in a dark room with the volume turned to 11.

I'm watching Season 4 of Falling Skies, and it's quite good, definitely more than just another alien invasion soap opera.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes..
the first one was better..but neither are great

Personally I thought they were brilliant. Andy Serkis is excellent as Caesar and the perspective on the story was interesting. Loads better than the Tim Burton disaster from a few years ago. Mistakenly I thought Dawn and Rise were a continuation so had avoided them, but thankfully a friend put me right.

Last night I watched a favourite of mine:

Dead Man's Shoes - 9/10

Paddy Considine knocks it out the park as the hero in what I reckon is Shane Meadows' best film (A Room for Romeo Brass always runs it a close second). Tough, gritty, funny, killer soundtrack, all the things I love in a film. Imagine Taxi Driver set in the Midlands and you're sort of close.

If you get the chance to, check out the band Considine is in, Riding the Low. They're bloody good and he's a thoroughly decent dude.
