The Detectorists. I can't believe I missed this for two series. My wife hates it - she doesn't like self-mickey-taking humour and all the Essex jokes.
I loved this series. They avoid 'telegraphing' the jokes, relying on the intelligence of the audience (brave).

Toby Jones is sublime in this.

The Maze Runner. Good sense of mystery and tension - stretches out a simple concept into a reasonably good movie.
Can't say anything very positive about the sequel, The Scorch Trials.

And they've left it open for a 3rd film.

This may be as good as everyone says it is. Decent world building, an utterly frenetic pace, and a sort of deranged, but coherent inventiveness in everything from the vehicle design (all the different types, each with their own roles) to the choreography of the set pieces.

If I had a criticism, it would be around the pace - it clips along so quickly that it can be easy to miss fairly important things - I got more than I expected from a second viewing as a result, I think.

Thor: The Dark World

Not as much fun as the original, sadly, but still pretty good.

Did you know Miller wanted to do it in black and white?

Annoyingly they didn't include that as an extra on the DVD but apparently it's coming out in cinemas this year.

Be interesting to see how that works as the colour in the film is so vibrant.

Good to see Detectorists getting some love. I really enjoyed it. Skilfully written by Crook with a perfect blend of humour and sadness.

If you want to watch it in B/W can you not just turn the colour down in your TV settings?

The heat fairly shimmers off the screen in the colour version - I was sceptical, but having looked out this;

And a couple of stills, I think I'd try to see it, personally - it will be a very different experience.

I'm assuming it will be a different cut (whilst some stills I've seen in B&W are spectacular, some of the desaturated colour frames are a bit confused) - it will also have no dialogue - just the soundscape and music.
