Selma: covering a particular phase of Martin Luther King's life around protests at Selma Alabama and the beutal treatment from the authorities.

Outstanding !

These things happened in my lifetime which is doubly shocking. Johnson was president at the time and it was limited what he could do in individual states - bearing in mind this is allowing black people to even vote.

A great and important film, a work of art not a plodding worthy thing either

Deadpool - 8/10

Big, stupid, violent, ridiculous and self aware. Loved it, and (perhaps selfishly) I hope it paves the way for more grown up adaptations of comics.

Pretty good, and on the lighter side as superhero adaptations go. Chris Pratt isn't quite as charming as he is in Parks and Rec, but his Starlord is played with a touch of the Jack Burtons (Big Trouble in Little China) about it. Great ensemble too - quite how the dynamic will carry over into the sequel (part of the fun of this one is the gelling together of the team, which you won't get next time around) is going to be interesting.

Dredd

An above average action film, but one hell of a Judge Dredd adaptation.

A funny and reprehensible take on excess. DiCaprio was excellent, as was McConaghuey's cameo but I'd have liked to seen more of Kyle Chandler. Stylish and stylised as you'd expect from Scorcese which really fit the largesse of the story.

Dads Army.
Enjoyable enough and not without merit, but some glaring errors in the plot (ringing Paris during the war???). Michael Gambon was the star of the show, but overall I can't help thinking it was an opportunity missed.

However, I am looking forward to the big screen remakes of Hi-de-Hi and It Ain't Half Hot Mum...;)

An, a gentle humorous film about dorayaki (a kind of pancake filled with a sweet sauce made from adsuki beans, the "An" from the film's title), the man who makes them and the woman he helps/who helps him. Like a witty Ealing comedy. But Japanese. Until the warm walk through the cherry blossoms stutters into a broodier, sadder tale. Beautiful photography.

And also Cemetery of Splendour. If you watch only one Thai film this year about sleeping sickness, the energy requirements of ancient kings, physical deformity and spirit mediation, make it this one.

Beautifully filmed psychological thriller. The performances are terrific, but there's little to get hold of; the main characters are unsympathetic, and their victims flit in and out of the film with little opportunity for you to invest anything much in willing them to escape. Chilly seems like an appropriate word for the characterisation.

Despite that, if you can lose yourself in the performances and cinematography, you'll find this an above average film of the type.

The Sure Thing. I first saw it at Bradford Uni during Fresher's Week, and it's been one of my favourite films ever since. The swimming pool monologue's one of the funniest things on film.

The Big Short.

I could have sworn it stars Bradd Pitt but heck if I could see him. Then I saw a guy who looked like a cross between the Ferrari guy in Cannonball Run and some dude in Boogie Nights (I gotta watch that again) and WHOOOA that's Pitt!

Unfortunately a forgettable film or maybe I wasn't quite in the mood to watch it. It was so forgettable in fact that when I saw this thread pop up, I had to go the cinema website to check what I had seen.

Jupiter Ascending.
Far, far better than the reviews suggested and I almost wish I'd gone to the cinema to see it on the big screen. Loved the references to Star Wars too - "I am not your mother"
Definitely recommended.
