Roadhump

Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted
Creed - 7/10

Another strong entry in the Rocky series. Great performances all round, excellent fight sequences and really clever use of one of cinemas most iconic musical themes. Had some really nice nods to previous films without being too nostalgic.

I did laugh when the announcer claimed 100,000 people were in Goodison Park (capacity 40,000) for the final fight. There's also a hospital scene featuring a pamphlet on "Siffilis" which sounds like a nasty condition...

Filmed at the Bullens Road side of the ground, I am probably in that scene having been at Goodison the day it was filmed (during half time some time last season - can't remember which game now though).

West Brom, Jan 19. 0-0.

Apparently Martinez has a cameo but I missed him.

Joy Ride - 6.5/10

A pretty plausible take on the 'psycho hunting down teenagers' cliché. Nothing the kids do is particularly stupid as it builds and maintains suspense throughout.

I particularly liked that they didn't do a big reveal as that often knackers films like this. Jeepers Creepers was one of the worst and always springs to mind. Tense, frightening and creepy, then you find out the monster looks like a melted puppet and the whole thing is ruined.

The Great Beauty. Italian. Very 'European', if you know what I mean. Ravishing. Not at all sure what it was about, or what it all meant (tho' I'm pretty sure it meant something), but just...ravishing. Never seen anything quite like it. I'm going to suggest it to my youngest (16).

The Program. I guess the problem (if that's the right word) with sport biopics is their potential to polarise. Fans of the sport in question probably know the story already, so the film holds no surprises. Movie watchers who aren't fans of that same sport perhaps struggle to care enough about the culture being depicted, the politics, the characters. I'm in the former camp, so I found it watchable but not mind-blowing. Also I'm quite the nerd when watching films based on true stories, constantly wondering how much dramatic licence has been taken with events. The performances are very good, although if I have one criticism of Ben Foster as Armstrong it's he doesn't really project any charisma. That might be intentional.

Anyone else seen it?

Nosferatu the Vampyre. Very German, very weird. Arguably just a tad up its own bum, but genuinely spooky and atmospheric. Probably an 8/10, tho' I wouldn't be in any great hurry to see it again.

Everest.

Some nice shots of the mountain.

Weak characterisation - felt no sympathy for anyone because of this.

Actual climbing scenes were also weak.

Shame really as the several books I read published following this tragic season on the mountain were gripping and very harrowing - completely diluted and sanitised on screen.

4/10 - mainly for the aerial views of Everest/Lhotse.
