Some of these odd services were also for driver route training, incase of a train being diverted from the normal route for whatever reason.
These days many franchises only run over certain specific routes so these route knowledge runs are quite rare.

I just arrived at Moor St station. This monster of a Syphon is ticking over in platform 4. God knows what it doing here, but lovely to see.

Used to chase these out of Glasgow on the West Highland line.

I just had a chat with the driver as I was leaving. Apparently they are route learning for a new line that's opening. I didn't have time to ask which one.
