I wonder if County is still the favoured term locally, I know as a teenager in the 70s in Nottingham, it was County, without exception.
Have my doubts on that.
The early to mid 70s certainly Notts were the team to follow while the other lot fumbled around not doing much in the old first division.
Then came a Boxing day local derby in the old second division which Notts won leading directly to a change of manager across the river with one Mr B Clough being appointed. The rest as they say is history. Now if Notts had lost....

But, thats a bit like how they were the first team to be relegated after the league was first expanded. They lost a "test match" against Darwen who were the champions of the new Second Division and as a result relegated despite finishing 14th out of 16th on 24 points. Bottom with 6 fewer points, were Newton Heath, later renamed Manchester United. Now if the bottom side had been relegated...
Incidentally 15th was the original Accrington with 23 points.
Yes often they are referred to just as County but the shorter name IME is commonly used.

Forest or County, the only descriptors needed locally.
But with Derby being only 15 miles away, wouldn't/couldn't County also mean Derby County, to some living between the 2 cities I wonder. 🤔

I went to watch Accrington Stanley play Grimsby Town yesterday. It was a decent game and a much needed win for Accy, as a defeat would've put us in a relegation spot. I think our manager has told the players to impress him if they want a place in the team to play Liverpool in the approaching FA Cup game and not to stress about protecting themselves against injury or red cards which would mean no Liverpool game for them. I'm surprised the game was on as we had hideous rain around here on New Year's Eve and in recent years that'd mean game off at 'The Wham Stadium' which I still think of as The Crown Ground.

Never thought of that, always lived Newark side of Nottingham or just off the city centre...you're right of course, some districts like Broxtowe are close to the M1, so really close to Derbyshire, so perhaps they favoured Notts to avoid confusion

In the last ten days my boys, Rovers, have played Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley, three of the top four in the Championship. I thought a quick round up would be worthwhile.

Rovers are a good side capable of very good football and defending to grind out results. Sunderland and Leeds are good, very good, and in both games we matched the opposition in every department. Played well and gave them a good game.

Today was Burnley at home. My cousin is a life-long Burnley fan. This week he told me "we'd be eaten alive in the PL. I want to win the league but not get promoted." The derby was a very disappointing game. Rovers were poor, nothing like the quality we've shown in recent matches. Burnley are slow and ponderous and, like Rovers, would struggle badly in the PL. If we had been anywhere close to our best we would have beaten the Clarets.

In terms of promotion the top two will be from Sheffield Utd, Leeds and Sunderland. Burnley will make the playoffs. I'd put Rovers at 50/50 for the playoffs. There are seven teams chasing 5th/6th and by losing at home to Hull and Burnley we've missed a big opportunity to create a gap.

Rovers are still seventh, but only because others haven't taken their chance to overtake us.

I listened to the game on Radio Lancashire. They said that Rovers had only one shot on goal and lacked firing power badly. I'm not mocking the Rovers as I watched them for many years and still want them to do well, especially when they play that lot, like today! A 0-1 defeat wasn't that bad against a club that as I said a few weeks ago, has many millions to spend on players due to their parachute payments going into the bank, every time they get relegated.

Arsenal managed a draw at Brighton. That leaves Lpool 5 points clear with 2 games in hand, those games being at home to Utd and Everton. Puts us in a strong position (I hope).

Burnley had only one shot and scored. Despite the money Burnley have available there a poor side. Signing Ashley Barnes, a shadow of his former self, shows how unwilling the club is to spend.

We don't really lack firepower. Ohashi is injured and Leonard, a far better player than the hopeless Gueye, was on the bench. My one argument with Eustace is playing Gueye who often doesn't have a clue what's going on around him or how he should play.
