Ouch. Hope it gets better quickly.

Did ride in, without ice tyres as I don't have any. Couple of slippery moments but kept it upright. Still felt better than driving, but probably should have taken the tram. Not sure any of the roads had been gritted at all, not even the main ones. Puddles and junctions the worst.

Bit of an adventure this morning. One of the roads I use had not been gritted and a driver had crashed off the road on black ice. I got to the end of it safely but as I changed down into the small ring, I had to stop unexpectedly and the chain jammed up when I started off again. I couldn't get it free so started to walk, until the verge ran out, then stopped in someone's driveway to have a think. I could not call my wife out as the icy roads would've put her in danger, plus time involved de-icing the car would have been excessive.

Instead I loosened the front derailleur from its mount which has a height adjustment bolt. This allowed me to free up the chain & I was able to resume my ride on the shortest route into work.

OK, I can stay upright on the icy bits thanks to the studs, but it feels like I am relying too much on others around me to drive safely on the ice as well. Whether through negligence or incompetence a driver could lose control. I'll probably stick to the boring but more direct and gritted route for now.

My morning commute is off road for these reasons in bad weather. Crashed coming off a main road after I crossed it to get to the next cycle route. Typical.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Beautiful wintry ride in today.

Exceptionally icy with hard frozen slush and last week's flood water so almost no cars on the back roads.

my usual commute routes are closed due to flooding now , the only option is a roundabout way along a dual carriageway , its a reet pain in the ass , saw a 3 car pile up earlier on an icy corner trying to take mini ck 1 to college .

Sorry to hear that some have suffered this morning!

@fossyant - sounds like you've done well over the years if this is your first off on ice in all that time. As much as I hate to admit it, I guess coming off in some way shape or form is inevitable and it sounds like the conditions couldn't have been much worse. I hope it's just bruising and that your recovery is swift!

@markharry66 - man, that sucks; hopefully the knobhead responsible will get taken to the cleaners by your mrs' insurance company. As much as I hate the culture, might it be worth looking at a personal injury claim? Sadly I agree with @ianrauk's observation that the standard of driving in this country only ever seems to get worse; presumably as a reflection of peoples' wider selfishness and misery..

Thankfully my journey was less eventful - awake stupidly early again; at least it gave me time to prepare without rushing.

I became low-level trapped in the car as I waited for it to defrost and the door refused to open; thankfully thoughts of having to strip the door down in the freezing cold later in the week were banished when I finally manage to open it about halfway into the journey - once it had presumably unfrozen - which was a massive relief.

Forecast said -3 and it felt like it; departing on the bike once parked pretty much as fortified as I could be in two base layers, coat, gloves, hat and bargain CRC-death-spiral Merino buff around my face.

Thankfully the reality of the route was far more paletable than I'd feared; with a good covering of frost but little to no standing water so ice was restricted to the odd frozen puddle.

Still took it very steady but thankfully the journey passed without incident; with a nice sunrise giving way to bright, clear skies - my mood peaking as I rolled into broad street with a fat grin on my face to the sound of FSOL's euphoric rave classic Papua New Guinea :becool:

After verbally abusing an inattentive van-self-gratification artist I stopped at the butchers for some particularly sublime, crisp-skinned sausages and a black pudding before heading to the office down the tow path.

This journey served to highlight the value of the buff - which has to be on a par with a decent hat in terms of efficacy and value; and probably even more versatile. Initially this served to keep the wind off my face and retain heat around my neck; before being rolled down to around my neck once I'd warmed up a bit. I bought two because they were reduced and wasn't sure I'd wear them - but I'm now very glad I did; especially as it makes me feel a bit like a ninja.

Heart rate's still uncharacteristically high but lower than yesterday; not sure if this is due to the cold, wind, lack of exercise over the holiday or the lingering post-viral fatigue I've apparently been suffering... regardless it's good to get out; even if I do feel utterly shattered as a result.

Safe journey home everyone - down here at least it looks like it should be warmer than the way in, and if last night's anything to go by hopefully pretty pleasant
