I saw it t'other night. And i was very happy.
I saw Star Wars in 1977 and it made a big impact on me. I was 9 years-old at the time. Everyone around me was into stealing and smoking, fighting, and snogging each others sisters. The sisters were the worst as you never knew where you stood with them.
I was at a wimsey before the film came out. Everyone would ask "What's your favourite film?" Well, i enjoyed the musicals, and really liked Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. And i always liked westerns. But, when pressed, I would always answer "The Dirty Dozen" because i had seen it about three times and knew every scene off by heart.
Some guy turned up by the name of Hartes. Not a popular guy. I had recently moved into the area and... well, anyone is OK for a visit, whoever it may be. He had a plan about going to watch Star Wars (again, for him). It would involve two buses and trying to sell newspapers to some chippy near the Odeon in south Manchester. All we needed was one pound. There was zero money in my household for things of this kind so i stole it. Anyway the plan worked remarkably well. We spent a day finding and selling newspapers in a unknown part of Manchester. And saw the most amazing film of all time. Star Wars.
I went alone the other night (i can count the number of people i know who would want to watch the film in the cinema with me on one hand). I wasn't totally alone in the theatre though. Most of the audience were between 30 and 50 years old perhaps.
Our 9 year-olds will find their own Star Wars.
