I saw it t'other night. And i was very happy.

I saw Star Wars in 1977 and it made a big impact on me. I was 9 years-old at the time. Everyone around me was into stealing and smoking, fighting, and snogging each others sisters. The sisters were the worst as you never knew where you stood with them.

I was at a wimsey before the film came out. Everyone would ask "What's your favourite film?" Well, i enjoyed the musicals, and really liked Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. And i always liked westerns. But, when pressed, I would always answer "The Dirty Dozen" because i had seen it about three times and knew every scene off by heart.

Some guy turned up by the name of Hartes. Not a popular guy. I had recently moved into the area and... well, anyone is OK for a visit, whoever it may be. He had a plan about going to watch Star Wars (again, for him). It would involve two buses and trying to sell newspapers to some chippy near the Odeon in south Manchester. All we needed was one pound. There was zero money in my household for things of this kind so i stole it. Anyway the plan worked remarkably well. We spent a day finding and selling newspapers in a unknown part of Manchester. And saw the most amazing film of all time. Star Wars.

I went alone the other night (i can count the number of people i know who would want to watch the film in the cinema with me on one hand). I wasn't totally alone in the theatre though. Most of the audience were between 30 and 50 years old perhaps.

Our 9 year-olds will find their own Star Wars.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan so haven't got round to seeing it at cinema yet. I'll probably end up waiting till one of my B-I-L's, a massive Star Wars fans, buys it on DVD then borrow it off him.

By the sounds of it I could probably get away with just re-watching number 4 & get the general gist of the new one

No, it's great. Loads to talk about. It will be underwhelming on the small screen. If you like Star Wars then definitely get into a screening.

Definitely one to watch on the big screen. I watched it with my son the other day. It was his first visit to the cinema and he absolutely loved it!!! I got just as much enjoyment from watching his face as he watched it! Awesome!

Still haven't found anyone to come with me, though I think my son might come as his gf isn't interested. It's just finding a time when she is out with her friends and so won't mind!

Did anyone else let out an audible gasp when...

...the shot of Rey sat in front of a large piece of junk pulled back to reveal that "junk" was an AT-AT walker on its side, half buried in sand?

It's the little things. Almost homages to the originals.

Yeah loved it - but wasn't surrounded by fans so kept it to myself ;)

This thread has "spoilers" in the title but clearly people are posting here before watching it. Which is annoying as I want to talk about all the amazeballs stuff that surprised me.

I thought it was rubbish.....total rehash of original story line.
HF was wooden in his acting. So we have as before a couple of young siblings separated with dodgy parenting facing a rehashed death star which they have to land on to stop the shields so that the fighters can fly a narrow channel and destroy the component that makes the death star vulnerable? Even a rehashed Darth Vader FFS! Even a face off over a bridge??? Seems like a cloned story!
You're being ironic...right?

Beautiful, wonderful, indulgent and joyous to watch...made me chuckle with comforting recognition all the way home...plot holes abundant (not least the inability of the rebels to hyperspeed behind the death stars...sorry star killers... shields, like solo just did) but I think even the plot holes were homage in their own right.

Looking forward to a second viewing.

I agree, it was a lazy plot*

Now commonly known as a "reboot" it seems.
Nah...a rehash (or lazy script) is tony Scott remaking top gun, calling it days of thunder and selling as a "new" film, whilst hoping we wouldn't notice...this was a respectful and very deliberate homage...although i hate that word...along with genre, so pretentious

Sure did...in fact I kept that up all night;

Fin finding skywalkers training globe, and tossing it over his shoulder...the huge battle cruisers buried like pyramids in the dunes, the tiny square black navigation droids, squeaking and scuttling about the imperial deck, the rectangular white lights on the internal walls of the star killer (and shiny black floors), the gold plated shield handle that screamed "pull me" to Rei...and so many more....fabulous

To show some balance, I do have a couple of "observations" that I hope will iron out as the next two installments unfold.

Rei...feisty, sure but not strong and irreverent in the way that Leia was In her youth...if I am right and the plot develops as I imagine...then Daddy will bring her up to speed.

Fin..enthusiastic, loyal, brave and inherently "good" but a little too coloured with the Disney crayon of appeal...he needs to step up and provide a challenge to the troupe, rather than appearing a little like he is on a "take your kid to work day"...especially around Chewy...he would have done better to actually leave...as he planned to... and then return to save the day..a-la Solo in IV... Thus establishing a stronger, more heroic character...if he is not careful he will join Ja Ja binks serving big Macs to the imperial workers.

General Ackbar Not shouting.."its a trap!"..( note to Mr Abrams...JJ my dear, if your gonna go...go hard)

Leia...who was she and what has she done with Carrie Fisher?

There, that's all I can drag myself to say by way of criticism.

It's OK but hardly an in-depth story. Recommended if want to view it and not use brain much. Fortunately I am in that frame of mind often enough to be able to watch the movie.

I feel like I could... TAKE ON THE WORLD!!
Well I really liked it, yes, it borrowed elements from the original movies but I expected that as he did similar for his Star Trek movies and I also though they would play it safe with this one. After the prequels they needed at the least a good movie to give everything else a base to work from. There are at least 5 more films in the works so they couldn't afford this to be a flop. Also its Star Wars, there were superweapons to blow up in half of the other movies too, the fun is in how they do it.

I found myself liking the new characters immediately and it was good to see the old as well. Daisy Ridley was great, John Boyega played his part well as a reluctant hero. Han looked old and tired but I think he was meant to, Luke looked better than Id hoped and the criticism of Carrie Fisher for her looks is out of order IMO. The humour was good, Poe's "how does this work? do I talk first?" when confronting Kylo and BB8s lighter thumbs up got honest laughs. Compared to the prequels this was high art after the 'stepping in poop' gags.

Oh and General Hux was brillantly insane in his Nazi-esq speech

Im looking forward to Rogue one now.
