The first Trek movie was an origin story, which has never been really done before and the second was a reworking of The Khan film. But as it's all in an alternative timeline, it's OK. SW 'problem' is that Lucas conceived it as a serial, based on the old serials of the 1940's with Buster Crabbe. In fact, I recall Lucas tried to buy the rights, but couldn't so went off to write SW instead. So SW is a long story, cut into segments or episodes with the scrolling 'story so far' writing. The six movies prior to this one chronicle the rise and fall of an Empire. So really, SW ended in 1983, Emperor dead, second Death Star destroyed, Vader redeems himself before death etc. That's it, story done.
In the 70's, Lucas did mention 9 movies, 3 trilogies. But later said it would work best as six, which it does. Trouble is, anything after Jedi is really like an addendum. I was disappointed with SW TFA as it recycled old plot ideas and is also choc with plot holes. It may now be the highest grossing movie ever, but that doesn't make it a good movie. I've met quite a few 'old school' SW fans who felt a bit let down by the reworked story, which is basically a rehash of episode 4:
Orphan on desert planet dreams of better life and encounters a droid with information hidden in it...... Clearly, many people have been dazzled by the space battles and lightsabre duels to notice the recycling or plot inaccuracies. SW fans mustn't be that fussy, I suppose. However, I like my movies to surprise me, at least have some originality and be logically self-consistent. Here are a few of the plot holes:
How does selling junk from spacecraft make you a pilot?. If I sold junk from Boenig aircraft, would it make me a pilot?
Han Solo finds Falcon suspiciously quickly whereas First Order (corporate rebranded Empire) keep missing them?.
Falcon drops out of hyperspace to get behind Starkiller shields, to let down said shields so that rebels can attack (Didn't we do that in Jedi?). So why don't the rebels do the same?.
I'm looking forward to Family Guy doing a parody of this one.
