The first Trek movie was an origin story, which has never been really done before and the second was a reworking of The Khan film. But as it's all in an alternative timeline, it's OK. SW 'problem' is that Lucas conceived it as a serial, based on the old serials of the 1940's with Buster Crabbe. In fact, I recall Lucas tried to buy the rights, but couldn't so went off to write SW instead. So SW is a long story, cut into segments or episodes with the scrolling 'story so far' writing. The six movies prior to this one chronicle the rise and fall of an Empire. So really, SW ended in 1983, Emperor dead, second Death Star destroyed, Vader redeems himself before death etc. That's it, story done.

In the 70's, Lucas did mention 9 movies, 3 trilogies. But later said it would work best as six, which it does. Trouble is, anything after Jedi is really like an addendum. I was disappointed with SW TFA as it recycled old plot ideas and is also choc with plot holes. It may now be the highest grossing movie ever, but that doesn't make it a good movie. I've met quite a few 'old school' SW fans who felt a bit let down by the reworked story, which is basically a rehash of episode 4:
Orphan on desert planet dreams of better life and encounters a droid with information hidden in it...... Clearly, many people have been dazzled by the space battles and lightsabre duels to notice the recycling or plot inaccuracies. SW fans mustn't be that fussy, I suppose. However, I like my movies to surprise me, at least have some originality and be logically self-consistent. Here are a few of the plot holes:

How does selling junk from spacecraft make you a pilot?. If I sold junk from Boenig aircraft, would it make me a pilot?

Han Solo finds Falcon suspiciously quickly whereas First Order (corporate rebranded Empire) keep missing them?.

Falcon drops out of hyperspace to get behind Starkiller shields, to let down said shields so that rebels can attack (Didn't we do that in Jedi?). So why don't the rebels do the same?.

I'm looking forward to Family Guy doing a parody of this one:okay:.

It's OK but hardly an in-depth story. Recommended if want to view it and not use brain much. Fortunately I am in that frame of mind often enough to be able to watch the movie.

Agree - came out disappointed to be honest. There was lots of opportunity to expand the characters, which they didn't do. So, it ended up being very shallow. I didn't warm to any of the characters and was nonplussed when Mr Solo went. The archetypal baddy was really badly acted.

I wanted it to be Lord of the Rings Esque, but it wasn't. Disney bollox.

Oh dear...
  1. how do you know that selling junk is the only thing she's ever done?
  2. luck/chance. it's a common plot device
  3. are the X wings and other smaller attack craft fitted with hyperspace capabilities?
I don't actually know the answers to the above but, if i watched movies and just searched for the plot holes, i wouldn't enjoy any of them. Most films do have them.

They are but its also said to be incredibly dangerous/impossible that only a nutter like Han Solo would try, I doubt the resistance would risk the few ships they have doing it.

Plus its the Millenium Falcon, the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs!

1. I don't know, but surely if she had pilot skills and common sense together with her survival skils, she would have left that sand pit years before. She could have either stolen a ship or bartered her way out if she really wanted to leave.
2. Yes, but a lazy one at that. Funny how the Empire/First Order don't seem to have any luck. You'd think they could bend the Force a wee bit in their favour.
3. They must have otherwise how long must it have taken Luke in Empire to reach the Dagobah system?. Is it Tatooine's very close neighbour?, how long would his air supply have lasted etc. A simple scene of him entering/exiting hyperspace is all that's needed to fill a plot hole and help the story be a bit more self consistent/plausible it its fictional setting. OK, I suppose they could do something like have the X wings loaded up on the bigger ships which act like aircraft carriers and do have hyperspace capabilities. But Luke went alone in Empire, so it's safe to assume they do.

1. She didnt want to leave, she was waiting for her family to return.
2. Who knows how they found them quickly but its not a plot hole, just unexplained.
3. I think I and Tinpot covered that.

It all makes sense, you lot are just old and bitter because you never became Jedi Knights like you dreamed in the 70s.

:P

But seriously, it does do what the original Star Wars did - because that's what we liked - AND it sets up new characters and begins a new story arc.

Perfect.

Let's hope the next guy doesn't feck it up.

I'm hoping it retains one more element of the stories and jumps forward a few years where they new characters have developed a bit and the fall of the empire / rise of the republic(?) has changed the galactic setting for the story.

Not that interested in Rebel One TBH.

Plot holes? Jeez. I know you're not 9 years old any more. But, use your imagination!

It's set up for a big fight isn't it? Rey will be trained by Luke (I agree, possibly, her father) and Kylo Ren is to undergo 'the next stage in his training'.

Han Solo isn't dead either.

Interesting timeline if it is. How old is Rey portrayed as? Luke disappears for 30 years + a little romancing and a pregnancy along the way, and the plot doesn't really make me think he would have been romantically inclined if he disappeared for that long and ended up living on a rock. But it doesn't have to make sense - it's SW!
