Ham, egg and chips eaten.

Now some licorice all sorts for afters.:hungry: Bassett's of course. :becool:

oh interesting but sounds horrible.

It was. And the worst of it, was it was a crash that never should have happened.

The penny-pinching circuit owners were decidedly culpable here, because they repeatedly refused to make changes to the circuit after several previous fatalities at the same corner - a fast, sweeping and downhill right-hander. There was no run-off or gravel trap, just a bit of grass on the outside of the corner, then an armco barrier and the earth bank for the spectators directly behind the barrier. Paul never stood a chance.

It took a couple of further fatalities there, one just weeks after Paul's accident, plus the setting up of a safety committee by Paul's older brother amongst other things, for the circuit to be changed.

To this day, the now former circuit owner still says the entire affair had nothing do with her.

My wife found a site which said that it should be just below the handle of the Plough . I had a look but I couldn't see it . Mind you there is a bit of thin cloud about . It could be that it might be visible in the morning .
I've seen comets before . The last one was difficult to find but once I found it I could find from then on . That one was to the North quite a bit up from the horizon . Hale Bop was the best ! Ooh! What's that helicopter doing with its search light on ?

Against all expectations, my car started at the first press of the starter button this morning. Goodness knows how as I think there was just enough charge in the battery to turn the engine over for a couple of revolutions (it was that slow), but it fired into life almost immediately so I took it for a short run up the A14 so all should be ready if I need to use it on Thursday if the train strikes go ahead.

To make things even better I got home and the postie had delivered a couple of insurance renewal letters, both of which informed me that my premiums had reduced this year - home insurance by 80p per month and cycle recovery by £3.60 for the year :becool:

I'm trying to persuade myself that I don't need a 1970s Motobecane folding bike.

The plans for tomorrow have been scuppered by football. Greater Anglia are offering a £10 return ticket offer and the plan was to take the bike on the train up to Cambridge, cycle to St. Ives alongside the Guided Busway, possibly lunch & a drink then home. Unfortunately the return train arrives in Ipswich 4 minutes after my local one departs and the next local train is just before 6pm which is the one all those who've been at Portman Road catch, so it will be packed out. As long as it's not too breezy, I may go on Monday instead.

No, no funny cambers or anything like that, just very, very fast.

It's a chicane these days. The earth bank has been moved back quite a ways and there's now a big gravel trap in place where the old bank used to be. The original corner forms the escape road for the chicane.

Here's a video of how the circuit was like the year before the accident (1990) - it's a test session for the same type of car (the level just below Formula One) that Paul was driving when he was killed. About 12 seconds in, you can see a view of the corner from the exit - Paul hit the barrier at the left-most end of the tyre stack as you see it. That red Mateus-sponsored car is the exact same one Paul drove in that fateful 1991 race.

If you watch the video all the way through, you can see the poor quality of maintenance at the circuit. There's also some footage of Paul after about five and a half minutes in, then again at 7:50 driving the turquoise #12 Leyton House / Chatterbox car - blue & white helmet, the same as my avatar.

I've been to Oulton Park a couple of times, both just after the modifications were made at Knickerbrook. Even then it was possible to imagine the speeds that could be reached on the approach with no second chicane after the Shell Oils hairpin - the video has a couple of very short clips at 7:55 to give an idea.
