We're downsizing and will be about 2 miles from a gym. The weights in the garage had to go, which I enjoyed but was too busy improving the house to have time for, but I still have my bike. I can't do the mileage (up to 8 miles now) due to the Hoffa's fat pad thing (or whatever it is) going on, and when we move to the flat I'll have no home improvements to do.
I'm thinking of joining this gym, or seeing if I can pay per session. I'll cycle there and back.
I'm 50 now and want to lose some weight and tone up, plus I've read that muscle mass decreases from this age on.
For me it's going to be an atmosphere thing. I've only used gyms in holiday resorts before, and they've been small efforts and nearly deserted.

Might be worth asking if either gyms do classes (included in membership price). I know lots of people who enjoy pilates, circuits, boxercise and all that. probably more fun than grunting at weights and a good way to have a laugh with other like minded people.

I’ve just joined a brand new gym about 10 mins from home which opens tomorrow. £19 a month including all classes (and free parking for 2 hours if don’t walk/cycle). No pool or sauna etc though

At that price, I can go a couple of times a week

No obligation Taster for rest of September just a tenner

There are 4 or 5 low cost gyms near to home, hence the competitive prices

£25 a month for the Council one where I live. Includes use of the swimming pool but during limited times only because it is used by swimming clubs a lot - still times work for me. I only use it in the winter and only started last year - but find it a nice option to have during the winter months with some intervals on the gym bike followed by a 30 minute or so swim. I haven't really got anywhere convenient at home for a turbo, plus quite like a change of scene, plus the swimming makes a nice change. I generally found it made the winter more tolerable and I expect I got some fitness gains.

Local council gym is fine (Run by a charity which the Kings Lynn Council want to take back) that'll kill it. £25 a month and I use it on average 3 days a week on a Monday,Tuesday and a Friday I do not use it at the weekend as the the users and mood changes. I go at 7.a.m and finish by 8.30 as I work from home most of the time. I tried David Lloyds once and ran out of the place 5 minutes later. A lot of retired folk use the gym at this time of the morning as we are in Gods waiting room. (South West Norfolk) and they are a friendly bunch. I tend to use the cross trainer, treadmill for walking up hill as we do not have any round here and the exercise machines for general fitness. As for music it is KLFM which is pretty bad. I use bluetooth earbuds and spotify or podcasts so am not disturbed. There are also tv, s on with subtitles if you miss Piers Morgan.

I don't think the council run gym has sunbeds. I know the private one up the road does, but aren't sunbeds frowned upon by local authorities because of the cancer risk?

I've just been down to the council run gym to have a look around. The swimming pool had about 10 old age pensioner types in. The gym itself had three women in. One on a treadmill, one on a rowing machine and one was stood around not doing much. I asked the chap on the reception desk about things. I told him i was thinking of joining but not yet as i have a hernia op' to recover from for a fortnight or so. He told me about an offer they have for those 'getting back into exercise'. £30 for 3 months gives you access to the gym and the pool, though not the sauna/steam room. So that's £10 a month compared to the sign up fee of £27.50 a month. I know you can't use the sauna/steam room for the tenner offer, but it's still a good deal, though i don't think you can continue it after your 3 months for £30 ends.
