Anyone else watch the channel 5 programme last night on this.
Or am I alone in admitting to watching it.

In what way? None of anything else you say has any real bearing on that statement.

For people not living in big towns, it often uses less fuel to drive to "retail parks" on the edge of town, than to drive to the centre of town, when you also have to find somewhere to park.

I haven't lived within reasonable walking distance of more than one shop for 40 years.

I don't know of anybody who would drive miles between shops because of one or two price differences in their regular shopping. They might for big ticket items.

But I still don't see what all this (which has been the case for well over 20 years - from before the last big fuel crisis) has to do with the timing of the fuel crisis.
Sarcasm !
There was a fuel crisis back in the 70's which was handled much better than this ! In those days people tended to work locally and so there was less demand for fuel. A lot of freight was shipped by rail.
We have Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Lidl, Aldi located on 4 major routes into town . Not all supermarkets sell what one person may require and so they will have to travel from one to another . Towns grew up being the centres for trade being located on major crossing points, people moved in and around to work and trade . The closure of high street shops and the opening of supermarkets on the outskirts of town and the shopping malls located on motorways will force people to travel more .

As mentioned earlier, I didn't see it on the schedule, so no, I didn't watch it. "The Architecture The Railways Built" was excellent, and completely devoid of fuel queues.

What did you think of it? Were any interesting points made, deliberately or accidentally?

In the 70s it was a problem with actual shortage of fueld, I think
I do remember my Dad getting ration coupons - not sure if that was due to his disability or because he needed his car to visit patients in their homes - or both
Can't see ration coupons being acceptable nowadays - people are too entitled!

I seem to remember they also reduced the motorway speed limit to 50 to save fuel
It would be fun if they tried it now - imagine the screams of agony

The 70's was a genuine fuel crisis.

This time around its a panic buying crisis.

They have introduced 50 limits on a number of stretches of motorway and dual carriageway (and are increasing them), for air quality reasons. Enforced by average speed cameras. I haven't seen much in the way of outrage at it - and in fact the ones I use tend to have freer flowing traffic now, so at peak times you get through quicker with the 50 limit than you did before.

The main ones I know of that I drive sometimes are the M4 around Newport and between Port Talbot & Briton Ferry, and the A470 between Taffs Well and Pontypridd.

[EDIT]
By sheer coincidence, I've just seen news that they are going to be enforced from Monday. News to me that they weren't already being enforced - and traffic has been obeying them.

Missed it, would have watched it, for just the ability to shout at the TV. I was in and out the garage, bike tinkering, and looking for a toe strap (needed for the bike roof rack - stops the front wheels oscillating at speed - assuming I have fuel for the weekend).

According to local reports, both our garages are now out of fuel.

Meanwhile, on my morning walk which started going up through the town first, the bus into Perth had only 5 people on it but there were streams of single occupant cars. What a waste of fuel, but until public transport becomes an awful lot more attractive how can people be encouraged out of their cars. Either a bumpy, noisy ride on a bus that's usually frozen in the winter when you can sit in your comfy car in peace and quiet with warm air blasting. It's too much for most people to give up it seems.
