One of my Cats comes to sit on the side whilst I'm putting the food in dishes, sometimes sniffs at a bowl but never dives in, it's almost like the 'foreman' is watching your work

Nah we're on Cat Trip Nip adviser, over the years we've had 5 'move in' (there is a catflap so free to go in/out whenever)

Your original cat told their mates about you, the others pop in to see, then they talk about you, loudly usually in the early hours of the morning

New sofa arrived 3 days go and the cat has not sat on it yet , caught the little menace clawing the corner though

That's something we've rarely had issues with our lot over the years.
But then our house is liberally scattered with scratching posts of various descriptions - ! 🐱
And our clothing seems to be popular when we're wearing it - !

They use their posts, then the rug, dining chairs and settee. We just re-covered the settee with a heavier duty fabric. The 'leather' dining chairs got binned for cloth ones due to 'holes'.

we have an old couch & a new kitten. Wifey said: "it's an old couch, I don't mind if she digs her claws in, etc" This morning it dawned on me, when we replace the couch, the cat will be used to digging in, so we're doomed

Back when I was a 2 cat servant, I never had a problem with the male cat and furniture scratching - he did all that sort of thing with fence posts and the like outside. The female one made up for it indoors though - this is her relaxing in the results of various sessions on the carpet in the spare room (old and knackered so I thought it worth the sacrifice to save other carpets & furniture in the house)

And then she moved on to my bed and clawed herself a hidey hole

Sounds like I have a reasonably well behaved cat. She has never touched any furniture but did go for wallpaper in the spare bedroom. Bizarrely the only other place there is wallpaper is in the hall and she has never touched it. She uses her scratch posts well. In fact she can shred them within a year so I occasionally have to replace them.

excellent! growing up, we had a foot ottoman, something like this. our cat dug in from underneath & would sometimes sleep in it. no evidence whatsoever he was in there
