It's hardly 'catchy' ! It's no Dolphin, funky cat or some such which is the current trend from China.

But then neither are names from such as Tesla ("3", "S', "Y"), or VW (ID4")

Designed to be. I agree that they are not yet affordable. Although if you go to some countries they are a lot closer to affordable than here.
They, Musk/Tesla, will charge what they feel people will pay for one of their vehicles.
A fool and his money springs readily to mind.

Why? The Tesla is hands down the best EV money can buy. It's faster, has better range and is vastly ahead technology wise. He's reducing prices so more people can buy them, not increasing them to make them exclusive.

If you don't believe me, go and test drive three £50k EVs. Compare the Tesla Y to the VW ID4 and the Mercedes EQA or EQB I'll be amazed if you don't come out thinking the Y is far superior for the cash.

Porsche Taycan is a better car allround than Tesla imo. Admitedly more expensive than most Teslas but no way does Tesla build the best EV. Maybe on some criteria but overall; not a chance.

Tesla achilles heel is the low-rent interior and general feeling of cheapness especially as none are exactly cheap cars to purchase.

Tesla win on:-
  • Range
  • Price (big time)
  • Finish if comparing it to a Tesla S (which is what you should be comparing it to)
  • Luggage capacity
  • Tech.
The porsche has:-
Front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning with AEB are standard, with blind spot monitoring, night vision, and adaptive cruise control available as options.

The Tesla has a high resolution touch screen display, 360 security cameras, picture in picture imagery when you put a turn signal on so that you can see *everything* to the side of the car, autopilot or FSD which is far more advanced than lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, advanced collision avoidance. Caraoke, Bioweapon defense mode, streaming and video gaming, air suspension, easter eggs for fun, sentry mode, dog mode, summon, auto-presenting doors, automatic cabin overheat protection etc and continuous regular software updates and improvements. VW can't manage a significant software update per year.

It's hard to see what criteria the Tesla doesn't beat unless it's "being a boring ICE car".

I know they've not been out long, but is there any info on longevity? VW (and many others) use galvanised panels etc, and nowdays you rarely see any rust in them. Look at a 5 year old Merc, and quite a few have rusted through in the wheel arches. I'm sure there are other measures too, like number of breakdowns of cars over 5 years old, expected lifespan of key components etc etc.

Merc is a 'premium' brand, and yet still suffers from problems that cheaper makes don't. Where does a Tesla fit?

Latest update, we are not been forced to go electric. A few people I know have regretted it. One friends company car is a big jag & he’s allowed to charge it for free at work so he doesn’t regret it. They’re not viable for poor people.
