Are we being forced to go electric?

Unfortunately, Tesla's look pretty crap. I like the Honda e but it's range is rubbish, but then again it would be ideal for us, and keep an ICE for bike haulage and distance.

If you're going to 'keep an ICE for bike haulage and distance', with the associated depreciation, insurance, servicing, tax and other costs, are these more than offset by the cheaper running costs of the EV, also allowing for the (probably) higher purchase cost of the EV vs an equivalent ICE?

Our ICE cars are old-ish. Mine is 22 years old, that I'll think of getting rid in the next two years, maybe. It doesn't get used, but is a big saloon and can carry 4 MTB's up top and 4 blokes and kit in comfort. MrsF has a Qashqai that's 10 years old now, but low mlies, mint condition, but it will be an ar$e to chuck 4 bikes on the roof.

As for fuel use, no, I think electrons will cost us the same - my car doesn't move as I cycle to work, MrsF drives. Thinking 2 years ahead, if I get rid of my car, get a small EV, the Qashqai won't be driven other than long runs. MrsF will use the EV for commutes (20 miles a day in city traffic) - I'll cycle the same 20 miles... We have a little cheap Aygo for the kids etc, and that get's used for local shuffles.

I just just feel lucky to have experienced the heyday of ICE vehicles, we will have this again.

My current BMW 330d is now probably the last of the proper 6 cylinder BMW’s. although it has an infotainment screen, it still has analogue gauges and an old fashioned handbrake. Perhaps I’m just a bit of a dinosaur.

We can bore the grandchildren with stories of petrol and spark plugs and they won't have clue!!

VW are stopping production lines in China, Germany and Brasil. There are drone videos of literally tens of thousands of cars stockpiled. How long can a company keep making cars, no one is buying?

Maybe they need to up their game? I like my VW ID4 but the software is shoddy and it lacks many of the bells and whistles a Tesla has at the same price. If I had a choice I would go for a Tesla 4 over the ID4 any day.

Wow what a shock.

I'll let you into a secret. After visiting the inlaws my ID4 estimated 353 miles of range on a 100% battery.

It can't do it. Normal range is around 250 miles.

My Renault Grand Scenic used to have a thing that estimated how many miles you could travel with the diesel left in the tank. It was also hopeless.

The important thing is the charge left in the battery, just as for ICE the important thing is the amount of fuel left in the tank. Distance guessing is just that.

Also - isn't it odd that Musk had to create a team to suppress complaints (and Tesla do get a lot of complaints) but yet they have the highest customer satisfaction rating.

Got to admit Tesla didn't really appeal to me, having had a couple of VWs as my last two cars I saw one of their EVs as my future.

But they are growing on me a little now, still think I'll wait for a smaller vehicle so will be interested in seeing the 2 when it is released.

Maybe by then the VW ID2 will be out and improved upon their current offerings, who knows?

The range estimate on my thermal car is also poor. Below 80 miles, it changes to a refuel now message.

EVs should be able to estimate range better because many of the efficiency -changing variables ( gearing, revs, stop/starts) don't apply to them as much so it seems it should be a simpler Watts remaining divided by Watts needed per mile calculation. Outdoor temperature seems like the biggest new influence.

So if EV range estimate is as typically overoptimistic as thermal vehicles, it sounds like it could be manufacturer choice.

And aero / speed. The aero and speed make a big difference.
