Are we being forced to go electric?

But style may be (mostly is!) The primary function of a car otherwise we would all be driving leafs, Picassios or berlingos!🤣🤣🤣

Trust me I have owned and driven an early Picasso and there's not a lot of style involved

Function possibly are primary in your mind and mine, but I observe from my neighbours and advertising that image, fashion, lifestyle and status have a huge amount to do with the purchase of many cars.
I have family and friends who do the same, then change the vehicle quite early on. Thing is they do this over and over-never seem to learn.
But almost exactly the same price and performance as the petrol Cooper S, which I had before. And the small battery means lower weight which means decent handling and a peppy drive. Range is enough for me - has been for the last 18 months anyway.
Good for you, I didn't know very much about the car and if it meets your needs that's perfect Another EV

People always feel compelled to post this stuff, Mrs G is buying a Mini Because she wants a Mini. If she wanted a Zoe then she would have chosen a Zoe
I wish you well and the car fulfils her requirements

I've never bought a car on style as the primary reason-

Hang on I did, bought a Subaru Impreza turbo brand new, back when they were winning WRC. Turned out to be an amazing car practical, fast, turned heads, rare at the time. Wife was using it for work, she had negotiated a package that paid an amazing fuel allowance, covered the cost of fuel and all the servicing.. Kept that car over 10 years

Total whim, I nearly did buy Jaguar F type Supercharger, after a factory tour corporate do. Looked amazing, just impractical.

Then I came to my senses, bought Model S 100D

Talking of Tesla, after earnings announcement yesterday, they also said that further price reductions are coming. This is really going to bite into the other manufacturers who are making EVs at a massive loss per vehicle.

Then there is the Model 2(?), where it has been confirmed by many as not far away from official announcement/release.

Emotion plays a big role in purchases. Much of my prejudice against Tesla comes from an irrational dislike of the owner and I’ve never met the guy! Function wise, they seem well ahead of other EVs at the same price point.
Theres also brand loyalty at work, it’s ridiculous but I like my current Ford and know I’d be more likely to look at one of those before other options, fortunately the mustang is hideous!

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
All the cars I've owned in recent years have had to be functional and affordable - Citroen estate, Renault 18 estate, Peugeot 405 estate, Ford Focus estate (original shape), and currently a Peugeot 5008 MPV (original shape) - Spot the common factor. It's become increasingly difficult to purchase a vehicle that offers the same useful boot capacity as fashion has dictated fast-back sloping design, cutting the rear door height. The Berlingo and it's clones appear to be the only affordable vehicles available to me at the moment.
edit - even then the standard length Berlingo does not have the same depth of boot as the original Ford Focus estate.

I am hoping that we will see a move away from the standard SUV EV offering which in my view are hideous - too big and styling has gone out of the window. The model Y for example certainly has the technology but it’s design is one I could not live with.
I’m hoping for more saloon type vehicles such as the ID7 or Ioniq 6 as well as some smaller ones along with a smaller price point!

I'm the same. Tesla are objectively the best in terms of functionality and service wrap. Style aside as it's very subjective. However I can't really get past my (IMHO entirely rational) dislike of its CEO. Not its owner per se as he "only" owns 13%.

I have close to zero brand loyalty although my last 2 cars have been BMW.

I'm also conflicted, as a petrolhead since before I learned to drive, I almost feel guilty about it but as transport I really like the concept. I also ought to particularly loathe the Mach-E as it doesn't look like a 'Stang and lacks a 5.0 V8 but I really like it. Weird!

Neighbour has just had some EV plates made up for his V8 Mustang

No I don't think so, I think the price drop is to try to hold back the Chinese manufacturers who make way more electric cars and much cheaper. make

The potential demand for EVs is slowing as people respond to high car prices, the economy and the smaller differences risk between EV and ICE so I guess Tesla are trying to stimulate demand to meet their production. After all, they do have a decent profit margin to play with.
