Doesn't mention petrol cars. Mine doesn't run on gas.

Gas as in gasoline. US speak for petrol.

I wouldn’t imagine UK/EU vs US data would be vastly different but a quick search is all it takes

Data obtained by Air Quality News through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed that in 2019 the London Fire Brigade dealt with just 54 electric vehicle fires compared to 1,898 petrol and diesel fires.

Similarly, so far in 2020, the fire services have dealt with 1,021 petrol and diesel fires and just 27 electric vehicle fires.

Is that because there are fewer or per 1000?
It's because it's not based on setting fire to explodey stuff... (many fewer per 1000 than ICE - no oil, petrol, head gaskets etc etc)

According to research from a US auto insurer the rate is 3474.5 per 100,000 catching fire for ICE but 1529.9 per 100,000 for EV. Hybrids are the most likely to catch fire.

Those figures include all sorts though. Electric scooters and bikes. Golf buggies and home made illegal bikes. Not quite the same as comparing EV cars to ICE cars.
They're Fire Service supplied figures, similar to those from the US given earlier, which an insurance company used.

You'll have noticed as well that not every area is included, so the true figures will be higher.

My BIL has just bought a new car . It is petrol driven . He said that where he lives in Devon there aren't enough charging places around and he can't charge it up at home.

Eh! There are loads, these are the locations with 22kW or greater in the Devon region.

Also Devon is only ~60 miles wide, coast to coast

Once outside the desert of Devon, chargers are on every street corner

It’s all a compromise isn’t it !

I remember in the olden days I used to have to get into my car and drive to a petrol station. Back when I lived at home I had to drive about 25 minutes to the nearest station (not including the incredibly overpriced Murco). In the winter I had to stand and shiver for several minutes whilst I filled up and then my hands stank of diesel or petrol.

So yes, it's all a compromise in one way or another...
