Are we being forced to go electric?

Only vehicles upto 2019 got free supercharging on the S and X models. Always best to slow charge if possible

Just a question based on ignorance. It looks like the charger being used in the photo above disconnects at both ends. i.e it's not hardwired into the lamp post. Now I assume it's copper inside. Given the price of copper, how long is it going to be until they are stolen. People steal the overhead cabling for trains, so EV vehicles must be easy money!!

Just going out for a late night walk. Will let you know if you are right.

Dunno about the Tesla but my leaf locks the cable into the car.
I don't think you'll find it worth your while turning up at a scrap yard with 2 meters of cable in your hand.

You bring your own cable. When in use the cable locks at both ends. When finished you unplug it, coil it up and put it in your car. All that’s provided at the kerbside is the right socket into which you plug your cable.

Five different plugs at present, with two of those no longer used on new vehicles.
What happens should someone buys an older vehicle with one of the two plugs no longer in use.

Question regarding the space required by/given over to electric vehicles in car parks. Why do they require 50% more space than a similar petrol powered model? There's going to be larger carparks required, or fewer in existing ones.
Four EV parking spaces compared to six petrol powered on the opposite side.

Probably more about the cost of providing 6 charge points rather than the space required.

It doesn’t matter what the socket on the car is, you bring your own cable so have a cable that goes from whatever-your-car-is to the standard charger outlet port.

No there are two . Type 2 male and female ends CCS which is type 2 with two extra pins for supercharging.

Chademo will disappear because Nissan has gone CCS for new vehicles. However older Nissan's still have two connections Chademo and type 2.

By adopting CCS manufacturers only need one connection for both home/street side and supercharging

Type2 can be used for supercharging too. My Model S can charge upto 120kW on type 2. I've had hardware upgrade and adaptor for CCS and have max charge of 142kW. Seen as Tesla is replacing all their chargers to CCS 250kW it was prudent to take the cheap £100 upgrade at the time. Cost £200 ish now

I am sure that if the cable doesn't come with the car, you will still be able to buy appropriate ones for a good many years.

As with caravans, where all new models switched quite a few years ago to the Euro-style 13 pin single plug for connection to the towing vehicle, but you can still very easily get the old 12N/12S style plugs - and adapters if your car is fitted with the new one.

AFAIK, the charging outlets are all standard fitments, it is the car end which varies.

Anyhow, what's a Tesla doing using a public charging point - I thought they were all charged for free at their own superchargers or at home overnight from stored solar energy

(No, I'm not being totally serious)

They don't. That's a choice by the car park operator. I was parked in a bay at St Peters Hospital yesterday (they have 6). All of them the same size as other spaces.
