Doesn't even need funding. The charger companies will do a deal with the Council. The Council let them install the chargers, and then take a small % of the profits.

You seem ever so hopeful !! What about this street lights not right on the edge ? Trip hazards ahoy !! It might seem petty but you can see where this is all going !

If theres commercial winnings to be made expect such lampposts to be relocated if underground services permit.

It's not hopeful, it's what's happening., Brighton and Hove installed 200 lamppost chargers. The costs were met by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles and the operator Electric Blue. Westminster also used funding from the on-street residential chargepoint scheme and the go ultra low city scheme and funding from Ubitricity (owned by Shell). Portsmouth installed again thanks to the Office for zero emission vehicles (they keep changing the name). Funding is usually between central government and the provider. The provider is responsible for all maintenance and repair and takes some of the profit.

Anyhow, what's a Tesla doing using a public charging point - I thought they were all charged for free at their own superchargers or at home overnight from stored solar energy

(No, I'm not being totally serious)

Just a question based on ignorance. It looks like the charger being used in the photo above disconnects at both ends. i.e it's not hardwired into the lamp post. Now I assume it's copper inside. Given the price of copper, how long is it going to be until they are stolen. People steal the overhead cabling for trains, so EV vehicles must be easy money!!
