Are we being forced to go electric?

Unfortunately for reasons greater than our individual wants and desires that freedom of choice is being removed.

Our freedom of choice is how we adapt to those changes that fits with our lifestyles, needs and financial position.

I do not live in a country which recognises no limit on its authority in any sphere of public or private life and extends that authority to whatever length it considers to be greater than an individuals right to choose.

We all have to abide by the rules. It's not your God given right to drive a motor vehicle. You have to pass a test and make sure your vehicle adheres to the rules and regulations. This isn't a banana republic.

Where does the argument stop?

We were forced to stop using asbestos
We were forced to wear seatbelts
We were forced to stop paraffin lamps
We were forced to stop using 4* petrol
We were forced to stop smoking in pubs

The.bigger question has to be why?
The answer is for the greater good, our climate, our future

I do not subscribe to a mindset that we are being forced but doing nothing is not an option.

What will be situation regarding heavy goods vehicles, construction and agricultural vehicles, non electrified rail propulsion if diesel becomes difficult to find and expensive to buy. Is EV technology advancing quickly enough in these areas?

Nope!

The buses around west Yorkshire are 29yrs old belching out black smoke yet we have clean air zones.

Our PM takes a private jet to travel 200 miles!!!

Do as I say not as I do!!

Most trips around the farms here are in little buggies and I am sure they could easily be electrified. Whether farmers will buy them is another thing as they are very conservative. To use a nice phrase.^_^

I'm talking about tractors, combines, logging vehicles - not 'little buggies'

What's a logging vehicle, do you mean a Forwarder ? Not really agricultural is it. There would not be a great gain on using an electric combine as they are used so infrequently, but vehicles in constant use make a lot of sense.

I did see a bus person being interviewed and he was saying his company won't be buying any more diesel buses in the future.

Tesla already has a 500mile range truck which can haul 30000lb (correction) 82000lb on the roads in the USA. The savings over diesel fuel costs alone make them extremely attractive to haulage companies.

There's questions being raised over its legal status in some US states, due to the central driving position.

And on the simple fact that the windows don't actually wind down. There's a window that you can pop open, but there's times when the driver would need a window that actually opens enough to get an arm through. Made harder by the central driving position.

That's interesting.

One thing that Tesla have done very well is to push the boundaries and challenge the norm and that in itself has forced the sleeping giants of GM, Ford, VW etc. to rethink their strategy (which was to keep burning oil until it rain out!)

I think in a way the car manufacturers and governments have to get us to the point where the question is "why wouldn't you go electric?" being mindful that for personal reasons not everyone will want to or be able to.
