That's some excellent running. That path is very lumpy ! I have fond memories of the SWCP, in 2007 at age 58 I made the last mortgage payment on our house and was willing to quit my job if necessary as I was determined to " walk the path " while I was still able and quite young ( 58 ) The company I worked for were brilliant, gave me leave of absence for however long it took, handed me an envelope containing £400 in cash, wished me all the best and said they'd see me when I got back. On 28th May 2007 my wife and a friend dropped me at Minehead with my backpack weighing 10kg and off I set. I'd naively thought that I could " bang it out " in about four weeks but a few days in I realised it was going to take a fair bit longer. Not helped by June that year being the wettest on record up to that time. I remember various parts better than others, and Clovelly was spectacular. I got back home to Poole on the 4th July so six weeks in total. Coincidentally my body weight dropped by 10kg over the six weeks so I lost the same weight as my backpack.

Did you camp or B+B?

I saw a few hikers the ones with the biggest packs I said " I could never do that!" as they went up fights of stairs!

I had an excellent and very expensive tent weighing less than 1kg, a few bits of titanium cooking stuff from Alpkit and a pair of carbon fibre walking poles, again from Alpkit. I started off camping but after several days of rain and struggling with wet camping gear I decided to stay at B+B's wherever possible. I developed a strategy of setting off in the morning and then walking until I found somewhere to stop for lunch, I then worked out how much further I thought I could go and using the excellent SW Coastpath association guide I'd look up the nearest walker friendly digs listed near my destination and phone them up to see if they had a room. People were outstandingly helpful, even finding me a room for one person for one night on busy week-ends when they could have let the room for the whole weekend. I had the tent as a standby, and one evening was scoping out the local churchyard as I couldn't find digs. I went in to the Pub for a meal and realised they had rooms to let, saving me a spooky night in the graveyard!
I did it " dry" and had my first pint at the Bankes Arms at Studland before wandering along the beach to the Chain Ferry. Six weeks of no TV, Radio, music or newspapers did wonders for my health both physically and mentally.

Got new aim to get a good for age qualifying time for something like Boston marathon. I’m doubtful that my current running club is motivating me enough to achieve that (the last two weeks have seen a grand total of zero people turn up for their Tuesday group run for example).

Probably time to change club.

I spoke to a member of a local club here in Devon and it seemed like they had very little on. Look out on Facebook for runs was the response!

Currently club use an app and it’s pretty stale.It had good attendance before the pandemic but is just not recovering since the lockdown. I’ve seen the sign up sheets for another local club that not only match what my current club used to be like but they exceed it by some way.
 
Last night’s running club session was a challenge where you stated a pace that you would complete a 5k at then run the 5k without any timing aids of any sort. GPS watch could be started, with pace alerts turned off, then stuck in a pocket. Each runner would complete one 5k then, following a 5 minute break, complete their second and the one who average was closest to their predicted pace was declared the winner.

I plumbed for an easy’ pace I know I can comfortably run at hoping that would be the right tactic. So I set off, with 5 minutes per km listed as my target. Some time later I finished the first 5k and impatiently waited the 5 minutes before starting the second. I finished the second 5k and waited for the results.

They started with the furthest away from their predicted pace working up to the closest.After some time they came to me.

First 5k… 25 minutes dead….. second 5k…… also 25 minutes dead! To say I was surprised was an understatement as my pacing perception is usually pretty rubbish.

Couldn't get to parkrun today so ran 10m locally. Pace about a minute a mile slower than usual so I'll blame the heat. I think it's harder as I get older to cope with the heat?

Definitely. I’m sure I’ve become less heat tolerant. Last few days I felt heavy legged and lethargic just walking. I would never have managed a run. Thank goodness it’s looking cooler next week.
 
Great North Run completed yesterday. Very warm, especially in the middle part of the route, only cooling slightly as we neared the coast at South Shields.

Pleased with my time, coming in one minute ahead of my expectations given the conditions.

Luckily I started in an early wave and made the right decision to leave and head back to Newcastle promptly from the finish so managed to avoid the travel chaos later caused by torrential rain.

Yesterday I realised that my elder son’s Cubs session was perfectly timed to allow me to join the Uttoxeter Road Runners’ club run, something I used to do frequently but which I hadn’t done since 2017. I had half an hour between dropping Andrew off and the meet-up, so I jogged three miles and did some stretching, which I think has helped mitigate some of the terrible DOMS that I’ve got after the occasional parkruns I’ve done recently. Then 6 miles with the club at about 7:30/mile, and a further mile jog back to the Scout Hut. My first 10-mile run for 6
years, and I don’t feel too bad from it! Might be tempted to do it again next week!
