Any Runners On Here??

I took up running late (aged 47) and set my half marathon PB the year after at 1:38. Was away from running for over two years, following a serious injury, and came close in my first half marathon back running with a 1:39. Still hovering around that now (aged 54).

Regrettably, yes.
My dreams of breaking the 1:30 half are (I think) over. Closest I got was 1:34 in 2017, now I’m between 1:49 and 2:05

I'd been running for over ten years and did loads of races over a great variety of distances when in my early 40's I decided to see what I could do if I took it seriously and did really hard training. It was then that I set my PB's.
One thing that really helped was losing weight, I'm 5'10" and managed to get my weight down to a little over nine stone.

I did a 1.30 at the half way point of the Milton Keynes Marston far to fast. Pb is 3h10 would like to go under 1.30 and 3hrs!

I observed that for a realistic chance of going sub 3 in a Marathon I'd need to have run a half marathon no slower than 1:24 . There's so much going on subconsciously with racing. As you approach the race distance you're body starts preparing you to stop and the last couple of miles are really hard work no matter the distance.

Tell me about it! The marathon doesn't really start till about mile 20!! Then silly things like bridges become mountains!

3.10 is my pb. Perhaps I should give it a go again this year!

Joke - do you ever wonder if someone has run a marathon??

Don't worry they will soon tell you!!🤣🤣🤣

So I will tell you my marathon v half marathon experience.
I have run lots of half marathons under 1:30 with a pb of 1:21 but the two marathons I have run have been 3:21 and 3:34, the distance doesn't suit me at all, although I have run further on the fells.
@Tenkaykev that's seriously light for 5' 10" at the same height when I was a regular runner just under 10.5 stone was my lightest.

Yes, I was going through a rough patch at the time, redundancy, divorce and bereavement within a very short period. I found running helped me mentally as I could lose myself in it, and found my subconscious worked its way through the stress and things were more in proportion after a run. I did a few weeks of 100 miles+ training, was teetotal for several months ( didn't want the temptations of the bottle) and did loads of races.
All came good in the end, and surprisingly the PB's came after I'd basically stopped running for a couple of months. I ran the Poly and was having a bit of banter with the marshals on the way round, I even stopped briefly for a natter with the wife of a friend who I'd not seen in a while. I latched on to a couple of guys about the 22 mile mark and they pulled me to the finish.

That depends how tall you are and your body structure, my lad has started doing the park runs and his times are coming down, but at 6' 2" and nearly 14 stone and lifting weights, I have told him to improve he should stop the weights and shed a few pounds, he is reluctant to stop the weights as he has been at it years, it all depends on your priorities.

I think I'm right in saying that light weights with lots of repeats will give you strength without muscle bulk? I used to go to the Gym from time to time. The real eye opener was when the trainer ( who knew I was a runner ) got me on the machine, ( can't remember its proper name ) where you lie on your back and hook your ankles under a couple of padded extrusions and then use your legs to lift them parallel to your trunk. My quads were understandably very strong. He then got me to lie face down with the backs of my heels under the extrusions, and do the same exercise. I could barely lift the minimum weight.

How refreshing to see people talking in imperial weight, I honestly don't have a clue when people say I am "xyz kilograms"
