It was almost a recreational substance.

When I was young, the old guy who ran one of the local pharmacies used to sell his own mix proprietary cough mixture. I have no idea what he put in it but it was strong stuff. He always put it in those old-fashioned brown glass bottles.

My OH still has a bottle of that somewhere - her parents used to swear by it, and she had a couple of out of date bottles in the back of her medicine cabinet. i think she managed to find some online somewhere only a couple of years ago. I joke that it got banned in most western countries.
They did change the formula and took all the opiates out of it iirc.

The only time I've had morphine was in the mid 1970's when I was working in the Jordan Valley. It was common for newcomers to get a serious (and I mean serious) dose of the squits (to be polite!)
For 3 days, all that was prescribed was black tea, dry toast and liquid morphine.
I can honestly see why people get addicted to it! (and I don't mean the tea & toast!)
