The only time I've had morphine was in the mid 1970's when I was working in the Jordan Valley. It was common for newcomers to get a serious (and I mean serious) dose of the squits (to be polite!)
For 3 days, all that was prescribed was black tea, dry toast and liquid morphine.

I can honestly see why people get addicted to it! (and I don't mean the tea & toast!)

Morphine makes me vomit violently, as we discovered at the worst possible time; directly after a Hernia operation.

I quite enjoyed the morphine when it was prescribed. Didn't enjoy the reason it was prescribed.
Think green tea and toast is superfluous.
Mine was for burns

Nothing to do with morphine but when my younger son had a contract anywhere in the Middle East he said he aways discounted the first couple of days for the same reason.

Yep! Definitely unavoidable.. Change of diet & flies everywhere..

I read that in many cases it's not just, or even mainly, questionable hygiene / food prep, or just the higher risks in hotter countries, but more that we are "in balance" as it were with the local gut bacteria, and if you go somewhere different the local gut bacteria take over and you get stomach upsets till things are back in balance. It's not unheard of to get sick again on return, as your bugs go back to the home grown varieties.

Of course, this may be utter bollocks, but it sounds plausible at least
