The joke is an inversion of expectation. We would normally expect an 8 year old to lose against a chess master ( a dog bikes man story) so a "news report" of a child playing in this fashion would carry the exceptional story that he beat them all ( man bites dog) But he lost so the story is back to dog bites man.
no still not getting it. The old story used to be a bet that if a child played 16 grand masters, the child would win as many as they lost allowing for draws

I think it is that , You expect the punchline to be along the lines of "and he won every one of them" but he lost them all which is the obvious outcome, i think :wacko:


Poor joke in its form here. May well make a good comedy sketch.

I got the Adult Education timetable through from Northumberland Council last week so I rang to ask about joining a yoga class, they explained that they had a beginner, general fitness and an advanced class and asked what level I thought I'd be- I said I'd done quite a bit of yoga before so I was still pretty flexible. They asked if I could do Tuesdays.
