- Somewhere wet & hilly in NW England.
Hmmmmmm - where to start.
Let's just say that we are not too badly off in our later years and our circle of friends range from those in similar positions to several couples who by most standards would be adjudged sitting very pretty financially.
All of them use our local (Kendal) Aldi and love it.
We are Londoners so maybe we have a bit of "Chav" in us - who knows - is it a genetic thing? If so then we both are as our roots are East End. So maybe our local Aldi is indeed "Chavvy" simply due to our presence! I do realise that this presupposes that "Chavs" come from London or thereabouts - maybe I have got it all wrong though.
Where was I?
Ah, yes....Aldi. Well ours is positively heaving with what looks like a mix of all local demographics although it is hard to tell really as where I live people tend to dress much the same regardless of where they sit in whatever method you use to measure social position - very few people here give a flying fig about the latest greatest handbag or Jimmy Choo etc. There is a good mix of cars in the car park, everything from basic fare to Jag's and Range Rovers etc etc.
From our own experience (every week) the only 'beef' we have about Aldi is the limited range - we wish we could do all our shopping there instead of having to also visit the overpriced Morrisons directly opposite as the Aldi store is small and the range is limited.
We have found the vast majority of the 'similar' products in Aldi to be first class but with the occasional 'dud'.
The packaged products are so close to the 'originals' that they must be made by the same manufacturer otherwise writs would be piling up - we suspect that the manufacturers maybe twist the ingredients slightly to justify the lower prices - although maybe I am wrong about this too. Whatever, we are pretty fussy eaters and wouldn't go back just to save money although the checkout bill for what we consider like for like products is substantially lower than Morrisons.
We also find that the fruit & veg in Aldi is of much higher quality than our Morrisons - it is much cheaper too.
For wine etc Aldi prices are brilliant. They have a Gin in stock that goes at £9.99 and it beat Gordons in a blind test by the Telegraph (might have the paper wrong but it was a 'posh' one). We can get perfectly acceptable wine there for <£4 etc etc.
There are heaps of really nice products available that are not obvious 'clones' eg we like Lindt/Thorntons choc's but Aldi do a cheapo bar of choc' at 99p and it just blows our socks off - it's gorgeous.
I'm not an Aldi employee btw I just wanted to say that our store is not 'Chavy' (unless we two make it thus) and that here, we, who are far from hard up, and our friends (some of whom easily have immediate access to liquid capital of seven figures) use the same store and love the price and quality - just for a bit of balance.
