Aldi...........pahhhh

Almost on a daily basis, my dad bangs on about how much they save by shopping at Aldi. He quotes that my sister cut her shopping bill in half. Well, I bit the bullet yesterday and did the shopping at Aldi...spent just as much as when we usually shop at Tesco and had to go to Tesco anyway after just to get the things that Aldi don't sell. What annoyed me most was not being able to pack your bags at the till! Seems like a ludicrous system!!!
Anyway, rant over! I must say that I found the best yoghurt ever in Aldi but it's back to our normal shopping routine...

Slight bit of stereotyping there or are you saying this happens at your store
A Lu said, it's the one nearest to us. We have two Asda stores on the south side of Leicester, one is near a sink estate, and one is in an up market area. It's like they are run by different companies, the food range, layout and feel of the places are completely different, just targeting their audience.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
If its like ours, there's no bit at end of tills to put your bags plus the next persons shopping is coming through before you are away.

Thanks. So you have to chuck everything onto the counter, then push the trolley to the other end to put everything back in it? Sounds stupid. Can you tell I've never been into that store?

I do all the shopping at aldi and drive past about 4 big chain supermarkets to get there (only 1.5 miles from home)

Our bi-weekly shop in asda for 5 of us was always £175+ it's now around £110 for exactly the same. What gets me is the stigma associated with aldi and lidl and the fact that it's full of poor chavs. Well at my aldi the car park is always full if range rovers, mercs, bmws etc

We sometimes go into Aldi and there are very few chavs, it is a shame that people look down on Aldi and Lidl, the fact is some people have to live on a budget so these places are ideal and their quality is nothing to sneer at, ours have better veg than sainsburys!

LidL Kit Kat is better than real Kit Kat, so is their piccalilli, its way better than Haywards stuff.

Lidl and aldi are slightly different as they are mainly or all German based foods but most of what we eat apart from the real cheap stuff is the same food just in a different packaging

I work in the food industry and have done for over 10 years

For example let's call her a friend of a friend spent a fair amount of money on a joint of meat from marks & spencer, when she was told that she could of bought it from another supermarket for a lot less her answer was but it's from m&s so it's top quality and far nicer

I know for a fact that it's exactly the same meat coming from exactly the same source just in a different packaging but for nearly double the price

People can be fooled into thinking some food is better quality judged by the packaging and where it's purchased from

Again I'm not including the real cheap food here although the dirt cheap food is very often off the same production line

For me, it's simply that I like certain supermarkets, not that I'm too good to go into a certain supermarket. It's what I'm used to

The Lidl near us is located by the worst council estate in town and can be full of chavs buying strong cider and crisps. The Aldi near my work is in the town centre and isn't. When I look past the customers I would say that Lidl is marginally better value but the presentation is not as good as Aldi.
My wife works at M&S and the food there is always of an excellent quality. I wouldn't rate Tescos, Sainsburys, Asda etc as being any better quality wise than their German competitors, they do however offer a slightly better shopping experience and a wider range of products but in my experience you tend to pay for that. I prefer to pay less and not have 10 diferrent types of mustard or pesto to choose from, one or two will do for me.
