Assuming it was the West Midlands, I think we can be sure that wasn't the reason because it is a well known fact* that very few people cycle in that area.

*which I have on impeccable authority.

I think Radio 4 is checking Cycle Chat for 'what's hot and what's not'.... Aldi/Lidl vs big brand supermarkets now being discussed on You and Yours !

Thousands queue for jobs at Aldi:

Job_hunters_queued_for_three_hours.jpg

"[Aldi] is searching for stock and store assistants to work at existing West Midlands stores as well as at a new store opening in Wolverhampton.

The interviews, which were being held at Brierley Hill in Dudley on Friday, were due to start at 1pm, but jobseekers started queuing as early as 10am, according to reports.

A store assistant earns between £7.95 and £9.50, according to Aldi’s website, and applicants would work a minimum of 20 hours a week."

They should get some pretty good people

or maybe not

"Long queues greeted the opening of a new Aldi store in Elland.

Over 200 shoppers queued outside the newly-built store on South Lane before the store was officially opened by manager Stewart Proctor.

News papers aren't too fussy about what photo accompanies an article.

A photographer friend of mine had one of his photographs used in a major tabloid... "Streets deserted as millions watch cup final" was the article... he'd taken the photo months before the cup final, early in the morning when the street was in fact 'deserted'

Aldi 18p noodles are as good as the Sainsbo ones at 78p! Am still using the cycle shoes and gloves I bought there last year. Not #1 quality but perfectly alright for commuting.
Y'know some really nasty snobbery on this thread.

It's a win/win for Aldi either way: thousands want to work there and thousands want to shop at their new stores. What the real truth is I don't know, journalists hardly ever get things right!

Go on, tilt your head!
If you can get over yourself and adapt to a slightly different shopping method (ie packing bags after you've been through checkout, and not during) then there is money to be saved using Aldi and Lidl... if you don't want to adapt then go shop elsewhere. Simples.

I've 2 pairs of Lidls cycling shoes. One pair I've used to cycle the length of the Pyrenees twice and to do a fortnight tour in the Alps plus more mundane rides and they are still going strong. They fit me beautifully because Lidl sold half sizes.

Well, the running special buys are next week, so that means the cycling stuff will be soon. Where is our insider CC member who is a store manager ?

We used to do all our shopping at Tesco or Sainsburys (except fruit, veg and meat) and since deciding to stop being a snobbish oaf have for the last 2 months done the majority at LIDL and the saving has been about £ 25 a week for family of 5.

Same here. Mine have outlasted my pair of Diadoras which cost five times as much.
