Carl what is wrong with 50%. I use that with 53/39 crank and 11-28 cassette. I go up all gradients in Zwift, can still maintain 75+rpm. I never over powered the Kickr but I've always used 50% or had a higher cadence. My knees don't like riding at 60-70 rpm for an hour, these days it's 95+rpm
I just wanted to see if I could climb the Alpe as I would need to in real life ..... answer is yes (assuming I don't topple over going so slow) but yes, in future I need to lower the realism as the Kikcr doesn't like 100% for so long on such high gradients

Alpe d’huez is only about 8% average though right? How high is the kickr resistance supposed to go?

Me on a pure climb I think I definitely want the realism 100%. I get on undulating courses it’s better to slacken off the realism a bit. But when it comes to climbing for me you want to fine tune the balance between working the lungs and the legs. So when you do come to do the climbs in real life you’ve got that prep in your back pocket.

I think you’re right that means you’ll need at least a 30t cassette. I’d recommend 32. Yesterday I did some relatively short hills on the fixie with 49-18 and the legs are still sulking a bit :B)

There are lots of 10 - 13% sections, but average overall as you say is 8%. Others have complained of the kicker overheating and losing resistance when they climb zwift alpe so it's a known fault. Someone more technical than me might know what is happening inside .... Magnets failing as too hot? When iset realism back to 0% it seemed more happy, so def something to do with trying to hold the resistance with high gradient when very hot internals.

I think i need more gears .... 11-30 just not enough. On road bike I have 11-32 and only 20% plus sections beat me. But, saying that, having to work harder on the trainer climb will help me when out in the real world :okay: Problem was more with the Kickr overheating at 100% :banghead:

On my neo ive got a 28 cassette compact upfront realism 100 as i want to keep it a real as possible

Just had a reply on wahoo Facebook page. Looks like solution is to have a fan pointing to trainer to keep the flywheel from overheating. Not overly impressed. Maybe this is why everyone rides at 50% realism

Sort makes sense of how my climbing sessions in BRVR feel now. As I am the slug I get to spend 2+ hours on most climbs, particularly the recent ones, after 1 or more like 1 1/2 hours the resistance would seem to slacken. Not by much but maybe enough to notice. The power/speed/cadence would stay the sameish, but the feel would be slightly easier. I thought it was down to me getting used to the effort and adapting .

Edit to add

The kickr v4 (silent) feels a lot harder at all grades even with the 42 on the back. The heavier flywheel feels more difficult to get going.

Having done the epic Kom yesterday at 50 % and the portaloo today at 100% in BRVR I can only day that zwift was flattering me! I sucked big time on the portaloo even trying to maintain 3W/kg was tough , yesterday it was easy.

I'm riding a compact with 11/32 and could hold 75 to 80 on 8 to 9% sections and still had a get out of jail card as well.

Well on one hand that obviously sucks. But on the other hand at least there’s some type of work around. I wonder if it’s a problem with all kickrs or just the older versions. Or maybe it’s the fact the units are aging that has made the effect more pronounced.

@Aleman knowing you’re choosing a new turbo and you like climbing. I think the neo is winning the argument right now!

Doing back to back days might also be a factor that effected you

To be fair you use a fan to keep cool, your performance would be hindered without air movement.

Its probably why I've never had the issues highlighted cause my big fan blows air all over my setup, so probably adds enough cooling for the Kickr

FWIW if you are training for real life mountain rides I think you should train at 100%. I know that setting the slider at 50% only affects gear range and not power output but you should train to the gear range you will have in the mountains. The fact is you engage different muscles in different ways when you ride at 100% and that is ideal preparation for a similar experience in the mountains.
