Did my first ride on Zwift in almost a month and decided to try The Grade to see what all the fuss is about. As I'm on the 25km free plan at the moment and the Elevation Evaluation route is 24.6km, I thought that would be the perfect option.
Not sure whether I was going all out or not - my power stats suggest I was mainly riding at the top end of Zone 4, occasionally leaking into Zone 5, but at the same time my heart rate certainly was at the upper end of my riding range for the last hairpin or so. Got an FTP of 255W (which isn't far off what I'd expect) and a segment time of 20:24.
One thing I did note however is a change from Zwift on how they deal with non-subscribed accounts. Previously when your 25km was used up, you'd get a message telling you to sign up, but you could dismiss it and carry on and finish your ride. You wouldn't get any XP, drops or badges, but you could continue - only if you tried to start a new ride would it stop you.
Now however, as soon as you get the message that you've used up your allowance, it slams on the brakes and you stop riding - you can put out as much power as you like, but your avatar will no longer move. That's not a bad thing, but it is a change that I think people need to know about so they don't get caught out. After all I used the previous system to do a ZRL race which was longer than the amount of free riding credit I had remaining, but now that wouldn't be an option.
