Are you sure he hasn't tweaked something else as well? I can get how something could go out of calibration over time - particularly with hard use, but a worn chain giving more power seems counter-intuitive.

He said there was another bit not working right .... the bit that free-wheeled after pedaling ... it should have resistance to slow the pedals down, but there was no resistance and so the pedals kept spinning. This is probably one of the reasons the power was reading too high.
Resistance tonight felt much harder for the power output. But intuition says is more realistic for me. So I'm glad the chain started slipping and I had to get it fixed else I wouldn't have spotted this.
Pedaling was smoother, and the bike was much quieter, no chain sound as it slapped around the innards of the bike.
So all in all, good an bad news ...
