Some years ago, I lent a lad from our club my spare 50/34 Ultegra crank and fitted a 36t cassette for him, when he did a coast to coast club event. He was chuffed to bits saying he was one of the very few that managed to cycle up Hardknott.

When I went to the Lake District I took my gravel bike for various reasons. I ended up doing Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter on it. I think it has a 46/30 front cog and a 32 on the back, which is very similar ratio to 34:36

(I lied - it's a 48/32, so not quite as good 1:1 vs 0.94:1)

The first time I went to the Lake District was with my cycling club 20 years ago. We did a 100-mile ride that went over Wrynose and Hardknott from east to west (so apparently the ‘easy’ side of Hardknott - I’m not sure Wrynose has an ‘easy’ side!), and I just about managed to get over both on 42x28 without putting a foot down…

I need to go again sometime. Still have quite a few left to "get"

Hardknott done virtually, 16min 57sec I think Gerbens safe I might be able to knock a couple of secs of but that's nearly full gas for me 3.28w/kg
While doing the Trollenstein in the climb portal the other month I thought I bet this would be epic in real life while doing this one I thought this would be f£#+>!g awful in real life in fact I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get up it on my current gearing 36/32 and definitely not staying in the big ring 🤣.
To compensate for all the climbing I changed to TT bike and broke the 100kmph barrier finally even this required a good 500w kick coming into the steep hairpin bends and I think I only matched @steverob top speed on a road bike while he wasn't trying the curse of being light and tall

You actually hit a higher speed on the second steep section closer to the portal exit (same as I did), which you didn't pedal for. But both sections got you over 100kph, so it doesn't really matter.

Correct I probably would have broken 100kmph without the kick but I wanted to be 100% sure

Kicking into a super-tuck is a good racing habit anyway. You can sometimes get surprisingly large gaps on people on a descent just by kicking at the start. (Obvs you don't get supertuck on a TT bike, but the habit is still a good one)

I'm aiming to do the 10am Epic Race again tomorrow if anyone's up for it.

Just watched 'ridewithgerben' up the Hardknott

Bloody hell he smashed it, top 1% for time

Anyone fancy beating his time

That was quicker than top 1%, probably.

If you get a top 1% time, Zwift will say you're quicker than 99% of attempts. If you get a 0.1% time, Zwift will still say you're quicker than 99% of attempts.

My best 12 min. power is 4.62W/kg but doubt that's enough to beat someone who looks like a stick insect.
