On a race at the weekend, having been dropped by the group I was in, I caught another solo-ing rider with 3 miles to go. I figured they might appreciate the company and maybe could share the load to try and keep the group behind us away. Nope - they persistently sat on my wheel, accelerating to 4 w/kg every time it looked like I might be pulling away, slowing to 1 w/kg whenever they came close to pulling level with me.
I didn't have the energy left to put in a sustained dig to get clear of them, so instead I put on the brakes and slowed to sub 1-w/kg and watched to see what they would do. They STILL would not take the hint and tried to remain behind me, so I waited until the group behind caught us with half a mile to go (I think there was only a small chance of them catching if I had stayed doing my normal watts), accelerated and latched on to the back of them and left the wheelsucking rider behind.
I let that group contest the sprint and rolled in easy behind them, still a few seconds ahead of the dropped rider. I'd lost about five positions to make my point, but they'd lost six, so I'm claiming the high ground!
