Took my daughter out for a walk today on the North Downs. Just exploring a short section of the ridge between Netley Heath and Clandon Downs.
Found a byway open to all traffic that went straight down the hillside - a rutted slippery wet chalk track, with loose nodules of flint, wet fallen leaves and mud; I nearly turned my ankle a few times....
On the valley floor we ignored the tunnel under the A25 that went to the village of Shere, and instead headed to "Silent Pool" - a flooded quary at the foot of the Downs; filled by a chalk spring - crystal clear (the sewage outfalls will be further downstream).
The adjacent organic Albury vineyard, and the Silent Pool Gin distilery were both closed, so we had a picnic on a bench looking across the water; then made our way up a different path back to the ridge and the car park where I'd left the car.
A very gentle walk of about 5 miles in about 3 or so hours.
