Rode Saturday 29th November:
Got train to Oxenholme then rode the fixed to the end of the tarmac up Long Sleddale, then locked it up, hefted the ice axe and went walking over the fells. Managed 6 tops in 4-6" of fresh powder snow and sun all day, got back down to the main track in the last of the daylight. Then rode back down the dale under starlight and as fast as I dared to make the train at Kendal. Nearly went in the ditch a few times and then had to go flat out down the A6 into Kendal. As you do. Scary but fun! One of the best days out I have ever had! It felt strange to pack winter walking gear and cycling gear in the same rucksack...

Despite the cold day, ride tonight was good. Tried latex gloves under my normal gloves....much better. I think it stops the wind drawing heat from your fingers. Also i always wear Bolle Viper safety glasses to keep the wind out of my eyes....brilliant.
Once again, i realise how few cyclists obey red lights and no lights and path riding is almost obligatory for some. I just dont get it ;)

Not too many miles....story of my life at the mo.

No snow for me ...first chance in ages of a decent hour or so to put in some miles after work...managed about 10, then the battery on my lights died
Bugger help me if i'd stayed out longer...my fingers had just started getting cold, and hey presto....chilblains again. Every bloomin winter ;)

Thick wool socks
Nike road shoes
Waterproof over shoes
Merino jersey as base layer
2 nike running t shirts
Dhb base layer on top
Altura night vision jacket
Hi vis vest
ear buff
Woollen Bayern Munich hat
Glasses
Giro helmet
Kitchen gloves
Aldi bike gloves

...all that and I'm still numb.

Hmmm....ok gloves in the right weather, but it's too cold for those. I have some and their ability to resist the cold is limited.
That in mind in went and got some Chiba gloves last year...cost me £35...cant say they're much better.
I dont know what the answer is, apart from taking the cheap option...wearing a pair of latex gloves under your normal ones (it seems to stop the heat being drawn off your fingers a bit), but then getting your gloves on and off is a bit of a fiddle.
Or take the dear option.....and spend some serious money

I was wearing latex kitchen gloves under the aldi ones..made no difference except to make my hands sweat.

I think I need to try stuffing something down in the gloves finger tips for added insulation there.
