First commute on the Trek 7.1FX in ages...feels a lot safer (albeit slower) in the icy mornings. Looks better with a bloomin great battery pack and Smart Owl light....i always think small is better on a roadbike.
Slower has its drawbacks in rush hour traffic...harder to keep pace with cars, its already shown itself tonight.
I used to hate that bike with a vengeance ;)...but its grown on me after about 5 years
Cold cold cold.....not so many commuters out there tonight. Snow forecast tomorrow  should be interesting.

A very slow 7.5ml (round) commute. The morning was very icy and I expected the evening to be worse but it was pretty mild actually. Yeah, tomorrow's snow forecast could be interesting.

Cold, windy and wet this morning B)
Cold, windy but dry this evening...nice commute spoiled by the inevitable bus driver, who overtook leaving me plenty of room at the front, but by the time he's passed..his rear end was a bit too close for comfort.
I just knew i'd catch him in the city centre  Pulled alongside and gesticulated 'a little more room' with my fingers.
Window down..he reckoned he'd left plenty of room.
No no, ..you were this close (about 12 inches).. i said

'Anyway..(keeping calm and collected)...all i'm asking is a little more room and respect my friend'

Yeah ok mate...

I'd like to think that rather than ranting, putting the point over positivey will encourage him to think next time...you dont have to make an enemy of yourself (do you )

15 miles extended commute today...not too cold, not too windy, a mix of deathly quiet unlit country cycleways and the normal rush hour city traffic. A good mix. Bugger, i love commuting. I love the fact people just dont get 'why your cycling when its this cold'...it's not bloody cold...yet.
Is it mild everywhere else ?

+3, slight breeze from the south, frost and icy patches on some roads. First time out iin about 3 weeks, managed about 12 miles in about hour on a hilly circuit. Low and very bright winters sun was dangerous, blinding drivers heading south had to take extra care on some road junctions.

A beautiful ride in clear, cold and sun through the Sussex lanes. If only winter was always like this.

for yesterday:
Attempted to ride the fixie up to Kentmere to go walking, so much ice on the road I was doing more walking than riding, then a Very Nice Man in a van gave me a lift to the end of the tarmac  (unprompted too!). Locked up the bike and then did quite a tough walk up Kentmere Pike and surrounding fells in about 30cm of snow - although there were many drifts of more than a metre (I found lots of them ).
Then came off the fell in a bit of a panic (and in the dusk) as I was so worried about riding back down the dale - dropped an expensive glove and lost it up there ;) but timewise I was fine - made the train back to Preston from Staveley with ten minutes to spare. Saw two chaps on XC skis up there, that was the only way to go!

I am surprised that no-one seems to mention that fixies grip a lot better than geared/freewheel bikes on snow and ice - I had several rear wheelslips and slides on the way back down, but was never close to coming off.

a short 25km ride (was hoping to do 80K +) - came off on some black ice so came straight home. Nothings broken, a few scrapes on my shifters, and a few holes in my altura boulder trousers (had keys in the ppocket) oh and my right hand is a bit sore ;)
