I've spent a few days down in Nottingham visiting my mum, and It's the first time I've had the car to myself for the journey, so I chucked the MTB in the back

I'd forgotten Nott'm had such great cycling and I rediscovered a few routes I've not done since I was much younger. One was a 23mile ride with less than 1 mile on road, and is mainly comprised of good condition bridleways, the Erewash Canal, River Trent, Beeston Canal, the Uni Campus, Wollaton Park and a couple of nature reserves.... all from the doorstep

back on the galaxy commuting - 2 days a week (rockhopper-training-for-the-C2C-has-ended)

I forget what a lovely bike it is; it corners like a pig, takes an eon to get up to speed; but is as comfy as my slippers my family regularly complain about...

Oh yeah 17 miles in 57 mins...

Not sure if this should be in the commuting bit or not as I did actually do an hour's paid work on this ride.
Left home at 10 ish and arrived just before 11am at a client's house to walk her dog. From there, having topped up the water bottles as it was a tad warm out, we rode up the Wroxham Road to Wroxham, over the bridge to Hoveton where we stopped for lunch at the Kings Head. A 90 min wait for food so we opted for the carvery despite the heat of the day. Turkey and a ton of veg (the roasties had been deep friend so I gave them a swerve) and then on to Coltishall and back to Norwich via the North Walsham Road and cut up Church Lane (now a cycle path and footpath) and back onto Wroxham Road where we went 100 yards in the wrong direction to cross at the crossing. Turning right on to that road is just daft when there is a crossing so close.
Once back in the right direction we went back to Jasper's house (Jasper being a Wire Fox Terrier) and walked him for another 30 minutes, with the aid of a calipo each, and then back on our bikes - armed with full bottles again and a bag of jelly babies. We followed our tyre tracks back the way we had come for a mile or so and then headed to The Marriotts Way and rode along there until Marlpit Lane and then rode up the big hill to the top where the lights went green, so no breather there, and on through the cycle paths of Bowthorpe to Chapel Break. From there we headed down the hill to Bawburgh and stopped by the river to give Hubbie's gears a wiggle.

We had a choice at this point. Go home on the back roads to Barford and then on to Wymondham. Up a nasty hill (when tired) and then undulating roads before heading up hill to Wymondham or Go up Stocks Hill, a road we have only ever ridden down and its quite erm, uppy. We decided on the Stocks Hill route. How hard could it be. Not too bad as it happened. It goes up and levels off, goes up again and levels off and then there is the short 3rd hill, only 100 yards or so to the B1108. At the top we doglegged left and right and came home via Little Melton and up to Wymondham where we went through the middle and past the library, not the car route of round to Waitrose and along Harts Farm. It would have put a couple of miles on and hubby was tired.

When we arrived at the end of our road, my bike computer said that I had ridden 44.25 miles. I thought that was a stupid mileage to stop at so I rode up Silfield and cut across Verdons Lane and back down Park Lane and home making my distance 46.08 miles. Hubby's bike computer said that he had ridden 44.85 miles so he did a couple of laps of the green before going through the garden gate. Map My ride said that the distance was 45.58, well MMR can poke off!

All in all, 46.08 miles on my Giant Defy 2 in 3 hours 36 mins and 52 seconds. After the debacle of last weekend, I am very happy. 633 feet of climbing (most of it Stocks Hill). Not bad for an overweight woman and a bloke on dialysis. We are both really pleased with today's ride.

Oh, one small thing. In the pub in Wroxham, some woman in the ladies loos said to me "You shouldn't be wearing lycra with your shape". The best reply that I could come up with, at such short notice was "They don't make lycra big enough for your shape". Naturally I thought of something much better on the way home, as always

I was planning my first ride out to Ludlow today, but while getting ready I had a call from my Aunt who wanted some help with her car, so it ended up being a ride to Market Drayton instead.

Wanting a relaxed ride I avoided the A53 and took a route through Shrewsbury, out to Uffington and Upton Magna, then via Rodington Heath to High Ercall and across to Eaton on Tern, Ollerton and Stoke Heath. I was a bit surprised that this roundabout route was only 1.3 miles further than if I'd gone straight up the A-road.

With light winds and plenty of :sun:(plus the effect from recent saddle adjustments) I was able to press on quite well and set a 15mph average speed on the way out (fast for me ^_^). The car (a '60s classic) was started, fettled, polished, fuelled and is ready to be shown at a local fete tomorrow.

The ride back wasn't quite as easy as the legs were a bit more tired and what little wind there was was now against me. I still managed to set a reasonable pace though and didn't lose too much off the overall average. I took a slightly different route on the way home, going to Condover from Upton Magna. Again, it didn't add as much to the distance as I thought.

The final tally was 52.7 miles at 14.7mph average speed overall.

Not many pics today as I was concentrating on the ride.

Looking from Downton towards the Wrekin. The poppies round the field edge caught my eye.

Approaching Ellerdine - this section of road reminds me a bit of rural France.

And another angle from the same area.
