Wow just Wow!! had a great ride today met a friend and his friend who is a CC'er and headed out over to frodsham and then along to helsby then kept it going to chester. We stopped for a bucket of tea at Eureka or Two Mills which ever you know it by. Steve my friend met some Liverpool Century club guys and we tagged along with them for a bit ( my first fast group ride ) then steve got a puncture and he wanted them to keep going as i was flagging so he'd ride me home. We then rode the length of the wirral home which was one of my challenges for this summer as i wanted to do a full circle from around the wirral then back from liverpool to home!!

After the success of my first 100k just over a week ago I wanted to get out and do another big ride. Browsing my OS maps I realised that if I linked together a couple of regular routes and a bit of the route from the 62 mile ride it would be somewhere around 70 miles.
So, being free today I decided to give it a go.

Unfortunately the sun was hiding away today and the wind was surprisingly :cold: for June (less than 12c when I started out) so a fleece was required.

The route started out heading to Cardington (via Condover, Ryton & Longnor). Just past Gretton a Red Kite took off from a tree at the side of the road and soared away across the fields. A magnificent sight but I wasn't quick enough to get a photo.

After Cardington I headed up to Cressage then Wroxeter and Upton Magna. I'd planned to have my lunch at Wroxeter, overlooking the Roman ruins but they had 2 coachloads of school kids going round the site which was a bit off putting, so I went a bit further up the road.

Upton Magna to Shawbury was a tough bit. Even though I'd only done about 35 miles my legs started to ache on this section and I started to struggle:wacko: . Stubbornness kicked in and I carried on anyway.

Shawbury to Great Ness was difficult too. As everyone knows, North Shropshire is flat..... except for the bit between Preston Brockhurst and Baschurch. There were some really long downhill sections though riding this way round which compensated a bit.

After Great Ness the going was easier. It's down hill or really flat between here and Crew Green which was a big help to my now flagging legs. Unfortunately after this though it got hilly again on the way to Westbury. I was overtaken by another cyclist, who then didn't pull away so I ended up following him for a good couple of miles. He must have known I was still there but didn't look round once. (Bet he didn't have 60+ miles under his belt :giggle:.)

Finally the home leg via Shorthill, Exfords Green and over Lyth Hill. At Shorthill I caught up with a lad doing a paper round who failed to make it up the titular short hill on his (decent) mountain bike with a rusty chain. I felt smug and sorry for him at the same time.

It was really nice to have a saddle comfortable enough to do this distance. The Brooks is bedding in nicely, except I feel I'm sat a teeny bit too far forwards. Comparing the seat post with the one on the knockabout bike, the clamp is further forward on this bike. I shall get another post and see if that solves the problem.

The final tally was 75.22 miles at 12.8 mph average. Happy with that.

Moreton Corbet Castle near Shawbury. Considering the place was abandoned about 200 years ago I don't think the condition is that bad.

Cae Howel on the way to Melverley. The farmer seems quite patriotic.

About to cross the border into Wales.

The 60 mile mark coincided almost exactly with crossing back into England. A good point for a cake stop I thought.

Usual volunteer ride of 52+ miles to see the new Longhorn bull " Vanguard" out in the field for the first time since he arrived as well as seeing the other bull " Strongbow" enjoying the sun.Took a different route home from Manchester airport and headed down a trail called Brooks drive which is a wonderful tree lined trail right up to Timperley.Had a bit of road work down Brooklands road which again is straight and can be busy at times. At Brooklands station you can jump on the Bridgewater canal and part of the Trans Pennine/Bridgewater Way up to Stretford and the grind of busy traffic past the Trafford Centre and all it's frantic shoppers.Jumped back on the canal at Eccles and rode all the way back to Astley on a very dry tow path......in the sun ! Just a couple of photo's for your approval

I have told him about this route so i hope he see's this. The centre section can be a bit un-even but do'able on a hybrid
Wouldn't mind seeing exactly where it starts and finishes, how much road it cuts out etc.

Might have a detour on Sunday to have a nosey (once I've been for a recce of your cycle teaching skills in the park)

You can join it at Brooklands roundabout from the Timperley end and just stay on it till it ends with a couple of small road crossings along the way.The part behind the Broomwood estate is not a nice as the parts nearer the airport but it's not as bad as some i've been on and you are off road for a good chunk.

Tonight was the same as last night but on my own, no hubby whinging about the midges, sun in his eyes, aching legs etc so tonight I did the course in 45mins 53 seconds which is an improvement of 9 mins & 12 seconds on last night so really really chuffed. A bunch of other riders blasted past me like I was going backwards, the lead rider yelled 'hole' and nearly gave me a heart attack, I was pedalling along, minding my own business and daydreaming. Really made me jump.

Actually shouldn't moan about hubby. I have been on at him for 2 years to find a cadence that works for him and just work it. Suddenly he has started doing just that I am having problems keeping up. I make sure I get out when he's on dialysis so I can get a bit fitter. I reckon that employing him, as of last year as a dog walker, has got him a bit fitter than I thought it would.
