40 miles this morning, quite windy but lovely to get off the hybrid and onto the road bike

Managed nearly 40 miles on the Cheshire lanes, dodged the expected rain too.
Stop off in Tatton park for coffee and cake, home in time for lunch

Went too fast to take any pics other than one of this rather nice abandoned bike

A 1h maximum effort pacing run on the turbo today. Wattage was low at 351.7w but very well paced & nothing left in the tank. Not that disappointing considering I've had almost a month of non-training due to injury.

I had hoped to try a new route today, but had a last minute change of mind and decided to do a long (for me) ride on a known route instead.

This ride links up a couple of established routes and extends the mileage nicely; so to start I dropped down into Shrewsbury and enjoyed the riverside ride through the Quarry. At St. Julians Friars I had to take a detour as the river has been high so the gates across the towpath have been closed and locked. (Probably just as well as the path will be covered in silt).

After that it was out to Upton Magna, Wroxeter, Cressage, Harley and eventually up to Cardington before heading home via Longnor and Condover. There was a good selection of other riders out which was nice.

On the approach to Harley I felt like there was nothing left in my legs but stubbornly decided to carry on. The result of this was that I was down to crawl on even the slightest of hills. I'm so glad I didn't go for the new (hilly) route this time .

On the plus side the Brooks felt much better today and although I'm a bit saddle sore from the mileage it is much better than if I'd used the Spoon.

41.4 miles today and 12mph average which I'm happy with given that I was struggling.

Down in the Quarry with Hercules.

The famous wall at Wroxeter (Viroconium). I'm sure the sky didn't look that moody when I was there.

Still at Wroxeter - looking towards The Lawley and Caer Caradoc (the peaks on the left) and the Long Mynd. They are another hour away yet.....

...but by the magic of the internet, here we jump to near the top of the pass between the Lawley and Caer Caradoc.

This wasn't part of the plan. Do I chance it and see if they are letting bikes through or take a long and hilly detour? My legs said chance it. ;)

Nearly home. Looking towards the Wrekin from Lyth Hill.

A 27 miler here today across the flatlands. Decided on a slight variation to my usual routes, and headed out across the fen on isolated tracks, some of which were new to me. From Lode I weaved my way over to Horningsea and then across the River Cam at this lock, called Baits Bite Lock.

Dull and cool here today, pretty good for cycling, though a bit more sun would have been good. Then I headed north alongside the river to Waterbeach. This section of path has a good surface and is normally pretty quiet, so no worries about hassle from grumpy peds (although I'm always very cautious/ curteous around them, it's often never enough, I sometimes think some folk are just permanently grumpy).

After Waterbeach I carried on north along Long Drove. Long, and straight. And best of all, quiet!

I then re-joined the riverside path up to the A1123 which I joined very briefly to cross back over the river to the east side again. This is a horrible road to cycle along and I normally avoid it at all costs. Cars go way too fast and I had a couple of really close passes that took my breath away. So I changed route and ducked south off the road on a track to Upware. The track, though rutted and boggy was a joy, and reminded me why I will normally do almost anything to avoid cycling on roads and the crap, mental British drivers.

Then I was back on familar territory, down through Wicken Fen on byways and then on down the Lodes way home again. Spring is well advanced here despite the low temperatures and birdwise, recently arrived migrant highlights today included a turtle dove at Lode purring away, several cuckoos dotted about the place, and best of all a nightingale singing at Wicken Fen.

100k with the cycling group today, over the Blackdowns to Escot near Ottery St Mary and Honiton, and then back to Taunton via Culmstock and Wellington. Took a lot longer than expected due to sat nav hissy fits so we kept having to stop to consult the map (good thing I printed one off as well as sending the gpx file to R!!). Next time, I'm going to stick to navigating the old fashioned way instead of relying on temperamental technology.

It also meant I didn't get a chance to take many photos, which is a shame as the sky was blue, the sun was hot and the views were spectacular.

Today's ride was............ FAST (by my standards)

10 mile TT, 21:24 (28.1 mph), I think 3rd place, but will need to see the official results. Possibly took the team prize with 2 of my club mates as well  As said, will have to wait for the official results to come out to be certain though!

Was rapid, on the way to the start was sat up putting in next to no effort and cruising at 25 mph! Once the race started, was absolutely flying. On the return had a bit of a challenge though, looked down at my Garmin to get a power check and my visor fogged up really bad, I could barely see, queue some rather awkward head angles (and probably compromised aerodynamics ) trying to make the most of the clearest section of visor, but overall happy with the ride, will analyse my power data later to see what went well and what not so well!

Another 40 miles with Southgate cycling club, Deb did really well this week, spent most of the time in the middle of the group this week, she did fuel up with some porridge for breakfast, she reckons it helped, she is getting a few good results on strava, that is spurring her on, her fitness levels are getting better and she is beginning to feel the benefits of not smoking, (about six months for her now). i think i had better stop pushing her before she gets faster than me.

It seemed daft not to turn the 500 yard ride to the village shop into a 12 mile loop around the flatlands, so that's what I did earlier. Cloudy and cool but slightly less cloudy and cool than recent days! As it was only a short saunter I didn't take many pics.

Lots of folk out on bikes on the Lodes Way, as it is now possible to ride from Ely to Cambridge almost entirely away from roads. Quiet routes do seem to encourage more cycling it would seem.

Here's Reach Lode from the new bridge
RL.jpg

A little further on, alongside Reach Lode, heading towards Reach village - an owl caught my eye, sat on a post.

This is a short eared owl. These are normally here in the winter (migrating from Scandinavia and Russia to escape the worst of the winter there). Most have headed back across the North Sea by now, so I wonder if this one may be a juvenile who's probably thought, 'Russia?- are you having a laugh?' and is staying here for the summer as young ones sometimes do. Lazy sods.

Plenty of cuckoos singing as well. I have definately heard more this year. Lets hope they have a good breeding season.

Then it was on towards home, to explain to Mrs G why a 2 minute trip to the shop had taken two hours. ^_^
