52 miles York, weather superb.Return journey i ran out of steam in Collingham about 8 miles from home.So slowly slowly did i ride home. But i enjoyed it.Being ill last week must have knocked the stuffing out of me.Also a mention for a Village store and tea room ,The Old School House in Rufforth,it is superb.Give it a try if you are in that area..

It's always a grind on the way back to Leeds on the A58. I've never enjoyed the return leg from Wetherby. You need to get yourself into the pie shop at Acomb and visit the winmill at Holgate next time you ride to York.

Today I finally rode up Box Hill!
I've lived in Dorking for over 6 months now and keep putting it off as I thought if I can't do it in one go I don't want to do it at all. Well we drove up at the weekend and I thought it doesn't seem that bad really...
It wasn't! I wasn't in granny gear, I was very comfortable, not even panting (not like me). All in all very enjoyable.

I'm glad it's not that bad, I've got to do it on the Ride London event in August.

An Adventurous Day Today,

61.95 mile today, up north of the Hudson again for about 8 miles to uptown Manhattan, the we got a bit lost in area that I didn't want to get lost in, we found a McDonalds had a coffee and checked the map. The area was a bit iffy, the toilets were locked and staff had to let you in them, and there were signs in the MaccyD " No Soliciting. Outside two big guys were facing up to each other over a parking space, until two big cops came along and moved them on. I later realised that we were in The Bronx. We sorted our bearings and found where we wanted to go, which was Van Courtland Park, and in particular the Putnam Trail which someone told us about on the ferry back from Staten Island on Sunday. We eventually found the trail. It's an old railroad track that has been turned into a cycle path a bit like a Sustrans route in the UK, that section is about 40 miles long, goes up through Yonkers and further north of New York. It doesn't look like much on the map but it's a beautiful wooded route and really nice paved pathway. Anyway did thirty miles had a fantastic lunch in the garden of an Italian restaurant, then came back. Ten miles from the hotel a spoke went in the rear wheel, less than half a mile from a really good bike shop, Treads Bikes, they fixed for me in the ten minutes. Lucky or what?

We had great day, it was beautiful weather, and a great ride.

Yes two friends of mine are doing it (I didn't get in... Probably too honest an estimated time!) and I said the same, it's easy! But then I hadn't ridden 70 miles previously!
Good luck, I hope you enjoy it.

I had planned on a nice easy 60 miler today, 30 miles down the A128 and 30 miles back on the same route. However I got to the 30 mile mark and saw a sign for Tilbury. As my wife and me have been thinking about using the Tilbury ferry for a day out in Gravesend I decided this would be a good chance to go and have a look at the docks, car parks etc. I took a wrong turning somewhere and ended up in East Tilbury near Coalhouse fort. Not to be outdone I set off along the path along the river which was a bit of an expedition with barriers to climb over, stretches of unfinished paths, paths disappearing altogether for stretches. All good fun! Several miles further on I came to the ferry terminal and did my exploration. That done I set off for home but could not work out how to get back onto the road I needed. I had no maps or sat nav with me. After going several miles out of my way, and ending up going towards Basildon, I eventually saw a sign to somehere I recognised and was able to get back onto the A128. Planned mileage was 60, actual mileage covered was 74.3 miles.

One interesting thing while on the Thames path, I saw the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious making her way up the river towards London. I also had a chat with some anglers (another passion of mine) and sorted out some fishing on the Thames.

Ah, good news, it'll be moored at Greenwich Reach by now. I don't know why but big fighting ships attract me, even though I live 99% as a pacifist. (The other 1% is German cars driven by Brits.)

An interesting day today.

35.5 miles today. Our last day in New Yoik! It was pissing down this morning when we woke, the weather up to today has been ACE. We walked a block to the Red Star Cafe for breakky, by the time that was done, the rain had gone. We rode south again down towards Brooklyn Bridge along the Greenway with the Hudson on our right, past the WWII aircraft carrier USS INTREPID.

We rode through the traffic into the financial district then onto the Brooklyn Bridge, which has a boardwalk pedestrian and cycle route over the top of the traffic, into Brooklyn, through the traffic on shared cycle routes, into Prospect Park, which is closed to traffic and has a cycle route around it, we met a man who had a staffy dog, which had paralysed back leg, it got around with two wheels strapped to its hind quarter, very sweet dog, and very happy. Stopped for a coffee, and it rained stair rods for bout an hour, so we had lunch too.

We left the park at the other end and cycled down a segregated cycle path about five miles down to Coney Island. The path was a PIA because we had to stop at lights at every block, it must have been about 30 blocks, really tedious, but interesting. Finally arrived at Coney Island, which was grey and misty and damp. Had pancakes the size of frisbees with about ten gallons of ice cream, chocolate sauce. As we were about to leave we met a young lad walking his beagle that wasn't quite the full shilling, he was fascinated by our accents and would not stop talking about terrorism. We finally got away from him and had an uneventful cycle back to the hotel....to find a dead man in the foyer. See other post.
