Cold out. Short ride but returned with a warm glow having got up Toot Hill without stopping for the first time. This was attempt number 5. Toyed with the idea of doing a repeat but decided to come home for a coffee instead.

Yesterdays ride took me through Bretton Sculpture park, I have never been a big fan of sculpture but some people have interesting ideas of what passes for art.

I usually load my routes to Bikemap.net to share with others but they have changed their site ( to improve it !) and in the process they have made it unusable, so I tried Strava and to my surprise I got a 1st place on 1 of the sections, I could become addicted.

We have had the tail of an aircraft at Tatton Park for our modern art.....might be still there but i have not visited lately

20 Miles for me at a briskish pace around the Cheshire Lanes. Wife working at 11:00 so time was limited.
Tried to do some intervals, but I kept getting distracted by triathletes who were doing the Wilmslow triathlon. At this point I couldn't help but put the hammer down and pass anyone with a number on their back:evil: . Childish I know,:shy: but I can't help it. ^_^ Missed the rain forecast. All good.

Came very close to posting an update from A&E this morning. I was doing 42mph down a hill, tapped the brakes for a corner and the bike jumped out from underneath me. No idea how but I kept it upright (thankfully nothing coming the other way as I was in the middle of the other lane by this point) and continued the descent at a much more sedate 37mph.

*waves to Bridgwater CC who passed me on the way up Blagdon Hill and the half or dozen or so other cyclists I saw up on the Blackdowns*

Sounds very scary. I'm glad you kept it shiny side up.

An eventful but enjoyable ride for me today. I cycled down to Yaxley to meet folk for an early start; went on an 80mile ride with them. One bloke had a near clipless moment before we even started. The leader took us down a very bad/ broken concrete road his idea of a jolk; strangely it was fun. We stopped at the end to let the back markers catch and one of our group did have a clipless moment; guess who  Assued his retention was too tight and went to adjust them, only to find, that you cant adjust Look mtb cleats (no wonder he'd got them cheap). Shortly down the road, on good tarmac, there was the shout of mechanical. When I turned round saw another bloke holding his saddle in his hand (the rails had snapped); amazingly with a toe clip strap we managed to get it ride-able and he did another 50+ miles with us :bravo: We then had a p'ture and a ripped tyre!
Later we got to a fast descent with a steep uphill but not technical, despite that one rider managed to lose control big time  IIRC, he swerved violently left, then right and then pirouetted (cartwheeled) into a ditch; we were all worried about him but he was pretty calm. After 5 or 10 mins, as we were gathering ourselves his tyre exploded  After a trip to A&E he tells us its what he thought, a sprained ankle, so hopefully we can laugh about it now; perhaps I'll sue him for the trauma and damage to my eardrum
The ride was pretty uneventful after then apart from somebody bonking and another near clipless moment; I made the mistake of catching him however, or it could have been funny

I've been trying to get 100 miles per week in, to make up for the winter mileage deficit. Unfortunately I've been a bit ill this week, so only managed a paltry 30 miles of commuting. So I went out at teatime last night and did 40 miles, and I got up early this morning for a wet & windy 30 miler. Averaged 17.2mph on both rides, though they were pretty flat.

Mission accomplished! Beers and takeaway tonight.
Beers and takeaway well deserved imo.

Another idle bimble around the flatlands hereabouts for me this morning. Around 18 miles in total. I really must start exploring further afield, but the allure of the largely car free Lodes Way is always strong.

I was inspired by JME (a local cycle blogger and all round jolly decent chap- as well as a talented photographer) to try two new tracks that I had yet to ride along. It's good to know that even when you think you know a place inside out, there are still places left to be discovered. At the start of one of the tracks I noticed the gypsies have moved a couple of miles to set up camp by Reach Lode bridge.

I have an awful lot of sympathy for them. There are precious few places for them to pitch up, they face some intolerable antipathy from some locals, and it's good to live in a world which still has room for folks to live in a different way.

The track I chose, (following JME's example), is very rutted indeed, but doable with a bit of concentration. I love tracks like this- they tend to be extremely quiet and you can go for miles without seeing a soul. If I were in charge of roads, I wouldn't waste millions dualling the A11, I'd either cobble it, or have it like this.

A short stretch of road took me to Upware, where I veered off along another track and soon reached 'slippery when wet' Wicken Fen.

After a mile or so, I took another new (to me anyway) track or drove. Glad I did too- it was bliss. Unbelievably quiet with only the sound of cuckoos, willow warblers, whitethroat, chiff chaffs, swifts, and reed and sedge warblers for company.
One cuckoo was pretty close - I didn't get a glimpse this time (they're normally quite easy to spot as they have a habit of perching quite high in trees to sing) but it sounded as if he was in the larger tree in the middle.

All too quickly, I was back at Burwell Lode and the crappy little bridge where you have to hike up and down steps with your bike. A new bridge is planned, designed, and has planning permission. But no funding. Good to know that we have our priorities right though, as millions are currently being spent on dualling the A11, destroying hundreds of acres of woodland, so that motorists can get to Thetford 5 minutes faster than before.

Musing on such things, as the sun disappeared behind cloud, I pootled home along the usual route, and reluctantly re-joined the rest of the world and it's noisy, busy roads near Swaffham Bulbeck. 18 miles in a shade under three hours- pretty quick for me.
My average speed this week according to my cycle computer has been 11.0 mph over 70 miles. Will have to aim for under 10.5 or so next week!
