It was a lovely sunny day, so a pal and I decided to ride over to the cafe in Sowerby Bridge that we rode to last week. What I didn't tell her was that I wanted to add some distance and a hill, so instead of a flat 12.5 mile ride at about 300 ft elevation, we did 17.5 miles including a climb up to 1,130 ft on the outward leg, returning by the Rochdale canal towpath and the Calder Valley Cycleway.

The outward leg was the Cycleway to Mytholmroyd, then the climb up through Cragg Vale until we got to the open moorland, then we turned left and headed over to Sowerby village, before dropping down the hill to Sowerby Bridge.

17.5 miles on a mountain bike with huge knobbly tyres felt like 30 miles would have done on my road bike, and either way, is the furthest I've ridden since I got ill last summer. It was also the first proper climb that I've done since then.

I felt pretty good apart from my dodgy leg which was swelling up quite a bit. This isn't happening as much as it was, but It might never heal up altogether - only time will tell. I will have to use low gears when climbing to reduce the strain on the leg, but that's okay.

Here's a picture of me at the highest point of the ride, looking typically gormless, with some nice scenery behind me!

51.59 mile today. Left W57 St., down to the Greenway cycle path north about 10 miles to were the path rises a few hundred feet to Hudson Heights then negotiated our way round the traffic to the path on top of George Washington Bridge across to New Jersey then north on to the Pallasides Interstate highway, which was a mistake! After about 8miles we got off that and a small detour to the beach, down a very fast hill, comfort break then back up. By now we started to see other cyclists, and realised the we should have gone the W9 road which is a very popular cycling route, we saw hundreds of cyclists on the road, some of them really going for it. This road is a big favourite for cyclist and the scenery is stunningI Google it if you've a mind to. A bit like going down an old A road in the UK, open for traffic but not busy and lots of signs stating "share the road" it was FAB.

We found our way to a very pretty town called Piermont, had a lovely lunch, loads of cyclists come here for the cake and coffee. We then made our way back, without going back on the interstate! We stopped off at a cycle shop, called Strictly Bicycles, had a nice cuppa and looked at some seriously bling bikes, including a Wiggo replica yellow Pinarello. Jane bought some gear in the sale, then we headed back over the bridge then south on the cycle path. A really fantastic day cycling.

Well, I wasn't exactly today but yesterday. I did my first 100 mile cycle:wahhey:102.9 miles according to Google 'My Tracks'. Rather pleased with myself especially since my first 42 miles was into a very strong head wind. No bad for an old bird, fast approaching her last birthday in her forties and who only took up cycling three years ago. Only dilemma now is what's the next cycle challenge.

Having had a visit from the puncture fairy from hell on Saturday, a small strand of wire 2mm long. I couldn’t get it out of the tyre until I got home; it required tweezers. So for the last 30 km of 71 km I was topping up my tyre with Co2.
So today I was determined to enjoy the sunshine. Headed towards Chester and then used the canal path to get outside the city. I’ve always wanted to see the pack horse bridges at Hockenhull Platts, near Tarvin. It was a beautiful day and a nice 108 km.

Today I finally rode up Box Hill!
I've lived in Dorking for over 6 months now and keep putting it off as I thought if I can't do it in one go I don't want to do it at all. Well we drove up at the weekend and I thought it doesn't seem that bad really...
It wasn't! I wasn't in granny gear, I was very comfortable, not even panting (not like me). All in all very enjoyable.

Mostly of road today went south through Thurnscoe, Goldthorpe and on to Boton on Dearne, Goldthope was in the news when on the day of Thatchers funeral a party was held there.
At Bolton on Dearne I picked up the TPT going west through Old Moor RSPB site, http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/d/dearne-oldmoor/cycling.aspx there is a cafe here if your hungry, I decided that my cafe stop would be at McDonald's at Barnsley is right at the side of the trail.
I know a few people who won't venture into McDonald's but the Coke's always cold the foods always warm and the service is quick, OK is not gourmet eating but its not gourmet prices either, it fills a spot when needed.
From Barnsley the TPT going North follows the old Barnsley Canal http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/barnsley/ba1.htm I left the TPT at Haw Park Woods and went through Anglers Country Park there is another cafe popular with cyclists, http://www.experiencewakefield.co.uk/thedms.aspx?dms=13&venue=1990131
I headed home through the grounds of Nostell Priory passing right by the front door of the house http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nostell-priory/ I exited the grounds through a gate at the Eastern edge onto Engine Lane.

In 1984 Nostell held a Pop festival it was at the height of the Convoy era a group of travelers who became regulars in the news.
