I got out to the Long Mynd today. I aim to ride up there once a month but I haven't got for about 2 months now and haven't done this particular route since about March.

The weather was pretty good for cycling - quite warm but misty so the sun wasn't beating down too hard.

To start with I went via Lyth Hill to spend as little time as possible on the A49, then headed out to Church Stretton via Condover, Ryton, Longnor and All Stretton. Then the route continued past Little Stretton and Minton before starting the big climb of the day at Hamperley.

While climbing Nutbatch I came across a group of people on mountain bikes who didn't look like they were enjoying the climb much and had stopped to study the map. They flagged me down and asked how far it was to the downhill. I was a bit cheeky and pointed back the way I'd come.:shy: Apparently they were staying in the camping pods at Blazing Bikes of Marshbrook and had planned their route off the map without realising how big the Long Mynd is. (They thought they were near the top. We were actually about 150 to 200ft into a 600ft climb:blink: ).

They caught up with me again at the top of this climb while I was having lunch and asked what I thought of their planned route - After struggling up Nutbatch I didn't think that dropping down to Asterton then having to climb about 700 or 800ft back up again  was a great idea and pointed them in the direction of the Little Stretton descent where there is a nice pub to recover in:thumbsup: . I hope they took my advice.

After that it was a routine ride past the gliding club, Pole Bank, and High Park before descending off the hill. I tried a different route back (had to do it from memory as I've only done it once before and didn't bring a map this time.) and took the wrong turn twice.

Finally I went back through Dorrington, Condover again and Lyth Hill before heading home. 38.4 miles, lots of climbing (all I know is maximum height was 1693ft) and an average of 10.9mph.

I took a few photos along the way which are here, with captions so you don't have to guess what you're looking at.;)

Stuck some knobblies on the rigid mtb which serves as my hack bike and went for a 4 hour blast round the footpaths, byways & bridleways around Basingstoke, Odiham, Tunworth & Cliddesden. Was great fun and so nice to get away from the roads for a while and back to my roots. Only problem is the mtb is fitted with the nasty hard uncomfortable saddle that came with my Triban and my a** HURTS despite 2 layers of padding!

Yesterday was too hot to work after mid-day (low 30s) so got out on the audax bike for a few breezy hours. Despite the heat I don't seem to drink much, just tip it over my head now and then. A few others out on the road but very little motor traffic.

May I ask what tyre pressure you use?

Got up extra early and went for a very pleasant 50 miles around rural Suffolk. Wasn't trying to achieve anything other than doing a decent number of miles, but am chuffed with an average speed of 16mph.

Only incident was when I stepped onto what I thought was a shallow bank of stinging nettles (to get out the way of a police car), only to find it waist deep! It felt quite nice on tired legs

I also paid my respects at one of the WW2 Air Force memorials that are dotted around East Anglia.

Took the back roads from Carlisle to Wetheral and had a nice sit by the river this morning with Mr6.
We detoured via Dalston on the way home with the intention of going to the pub for a sandwich, it was shut. We cycled to the next pub, it was shut and didn't look like it was opening any time soon. Back to the first pub-open!!! Fully booked and no we don't do sandwiches on Sundays:sad:
Decided to ditch the bikes at home and go to the pub in town instead. ^_^
A good 20 something miles, I totally earned that ice cream sundae:hungry:

THIS was yesterday's ride.

Rode out from home to the start of the Ironman UK lap course, (see HERE for lap details), in Adlington near Chorley.

Rode one lap of the course, (the Ironman competitors do 3, after a 14 mile point to point ride to the start as well!), then I rode back home.

51.37 miles according my new Garmin toy

done my first proper ride in ages ( apart from commuting ) , out to balloch and back ,around 38 miles (but had to ride to the start point and then home after ,so prob about 40 ml in total )well i was totally shot ,went out via the canal path and came back on the road ,the road was much more direct but much much harder ,and speeding motorists who passed very close didnt help when i was struggling up hills(a82 -avoid if poss),when i got home i was gubbed, and my gooch was louting lol
cracking day out though ,i was with a local group(grcm),on the way out on the cycle path it was a wee bit slow ,but on the way back on one section we averaged 21 mph (and no it wasnt downhill )i was really surprised at that ,but id say the average for me was a more realistic 15 mph ,the road has some lonh uphill drags and they really killed me
overall though id say it was a good effort even though the rest could have dropped me like a stone:blush:
