Set off to check a route this morning. It involved just a bit of climbing. By the time I finished I was knackered. 6.5hrs, 50 miles, or so I thought. Then I checked on Google maps and realised I'd actually done 77miles. Then later on I realised I hadn't started and finished as per the map, but two miles further on. So that's around 81 miles and quite a lot of climbing.

Out early-ish and rode to Ilkley via Pool and Askwith. Started off damp, then a gentle rain, then raining full on by Ilkley. The run back from Ilkley took an age because my L/H crank came loose and every 800 yds or so I had to get off and tighten it as best I could.
Anyhow by the time I got back the rain had stopped and the sun was out.

This morning I did a 45 mile loop I plotted in Northumberland, incorporating The Ryals. On the downside I had to get off and walk up the first hill (25%) but I managed it up the second one (16%) and all in all it was my longest ever ride, with a decent average of 16mph.

I played footy on Thursday and had a few drinks last night, which may have affected my performance somewhat!

Was in short v.disappointing.

Hadn't been out for about 8 days due to various factors so I was really up for a decent shift today.

Ther first 5 miles or so were great; decent speed, good rythym, felt in good shape. Probably read to much into that. Hit my first climb and in hindsight burnt myself out far too quickly; bodged the pace completely and ended up chewing alot of energy needlessly in a fit of stuborness. The following 10 or 12 miles were strained recovery miles; poor pace, didnt feel good in the saddle. Was aiming for a decent 40+, but after a another climb which only went marginally better and a close shave with the back of someone's car on the corresponding descent, decided to pack it in and head for home.

That one was a write off.

I only got a few miles before a hare decided to run into my wheels and commit suicide, and help me have a closer look at the road. I can confirm that the road was hard.

My sympathy: did you cook the hare for dinner?

I think the bike came out of it not too bad, scraped rear mech and handlebars knocked out of line are the obvious damage. But I think I'll get it checked over by someone who knows more about bikes than me (form an orderly queue)...I have some quite interesting scabs today
